From Publishers Weekly
The biographer of Flaubert, Colette, Petain and Camus here delivers an engrossing narrative account of one of the most traumatizing events of WW II. With a sharp eye for irony and incongruity, Lottman depicts the darkening of the City of Light during a notably lovely springtime as the German army approached and as rumors ran rampant--for instance, that German agents disguised as beggars, blind men, nuns and wounded French soldiers had infiltrated the city. The chronicle is rich in emotion and incident, with Lottman, Publishers Weekly 's European correspondent, relating the somber story largely as experienced by men and women who were there: then-colonel Charles de Gaulle, who commanded one of the few French units that stood and fought; high-school teacher Simone de Beauvoir, fretting over the fate of her soldier-lover Jean-Paul Sartre, on the Maginot Line; U.S. ambassador William Bullitt, rambunctious and self-dramatizing but also very courageous; and many other individuals, French and foreign, as they reacted to the national and personal crisis. Illustrated.

From Library Journal
On June 14, 1940, the German army entered an intact Paris and flew the swastika from the Arc de Triomphe. The French government had quietly departed, declaring the capital an open city. Lottman ( Flaubert: A Biography , LJ 2/1/89; Colette: A Life , LJ 11/1/90) gives us a day-by-day chronicle of events great and small from May 9, when blitzkrieg succeeded the "phony war," to the beginning of the occupation. His account is almost entirely from a Parisian perspective, disclosed through vivid but fragmentary accounts provided by dozens of public and private individuals who wrote diaries, gave interviews, or left other records. This method results in a sense of immediacy but makes for the disjointed narrative one would expect from cinematic short takes or a collage. The cumulative effect has considerable force, however. Recommended for academic and public libraries.

Complete and Well Written History of Paris, May-June 1940
By John P. Rooney
"The Fall of Paris, June 1940", by Herbert R. Lottman, sub-titled, "A Dramatic Narrative of the Final Weeks in Paris Before Its Capture by the German Army". HarperCollins, 1992.
This is a lengthy, (410 pages), well written book, describing the last five weeks or so of Paris as a free city before occupation by the German Army. The author, Herbert Lottman, a Native New Yorker, has written on other French subjects, including Marshall Petain, Albert Camus and Flaubert so Lottman is well prepared for this book. Each day from May 9, 1940 to June 23, 1940 is covered in a single chapter. The author did exhaustive research for each chapter. The book is exceedingly complete. After some reading, the reader can be so overwhelmed by the wealth of information that Lottman provides, that the temptation is to sneak ahead to the June 14th Chapter. June 14, 1940, is the day that German troops actually entered Paris.
Lottman brings to life the main actors in the French government, including Premier Paul Reynaud, his ever-interfering mistress, the old general Philippe Petain, and newly promoted general, Charles De Gaulle. By referencing their writings, the author also tells the tales of famous people, such as Jena-Paul Sarte, the philosopher, Maurice Chevalier, the actor, and many different journalists, including William Shirer and Clare Booth Luce. He does not, however, limit the personal reminiscences to the rich and famous, but includes recollections of the common people, including the French sergeant ordered to blow up the Eiffel Tower. Interestingly, one of the more memorable individuals in the book is the American Ambassador to France, William C. Bullitt, a friend of President Franklin Roosevelt. I wonder if H. Lottman chose some of the statements and actions of Ambassador Bullitt to provide a form of comic relief for the serious subject in this serious book.
Even in such a scholarly work, errors creep in. On page 341, he writes, "There were policemen here and their along their way." Clearly, too many possesive "theirs" are present. He wanted, "There were policemen here and there along their way". On page 394, in describing the visit of Adolf Hitler to a conquered Paris, Lottman terms Hitler, "Reichsfuehrer". Hitler was just simply "Der Fuehrer" and it was Heinrich Himmler (1900-1945) who had the title of "Reichsfuehrer". Overall, though, the book is well written and complete to the point of exhaustion.

Very Enlightening
By R. Ashley
Incredibly thorough, well researched, and nicely written. Contains countless stories about individuals who lived through these events. This book contains more personal accounts than battle details, which was refreshing. However, it was a tad too sparce on covering the battlefront, which made it sometimes seem disconnected from the big picture. A worthy read for anyone interested in the subject. Bravo!

The Fall of Herbert Lottman
By Donald P. Reed
The Fall of Paris, June 1940, Herbert Lottman [1927-2014]; HarperCollinsPublishers (1992 hardcover)

Post Note (02/15/16): Throw this thing in the garbage &, as soon as possible, get your hands on journalist Elliot Paul's classic, "The Last Time I Saw Paris" (Random House 1942).

*****

"The essence of good history is well-directed research that knows what to do & [what to] leave out, & also [written] extraordinarily well - & it involves people in their books."

--- An unidentified historian, paying a compliment to historian Martin Gilbert at the Politics & Prose Bookstore (WDC, 10/16/05; aired on CPAN3 on 01/27/08).

After finishing "The Fall of Paris," initially, I was going to quote the above as the reason why --- Lottman having failed on all counts save his extensive research --- two stars would be a more than generous appraisal. Nothing else. End of review.

Then… as the margin notes were assembled, came the gradual realization that I had finished reading one of the worst histories ever written.

The writing: Paceless, tedious & verbose. Sometimes it's necessary to slog through the first 100 pages until an author finds his “voice”; only then does the book become reading. With this in mind, on or about page 254 of "The Fall" is where you might start.

A) Despite this supposedly being a serious history, footnotes are missing. Also:

The “sources” at the end of the book do not provide "The Fall’s" page numbers that should correspond to the pages of the sources. If you want to check a source, you might have to read an entire book listed as that source.

(What is listed: The names of the authors, book titles, where published, publishers, & years of publication. Hypothetical example: “André Lemoine, Adieu, Paris: Gallimard, 1972.”)

B) There is no separate, alphabetized bibliography of sources (books, magazines, newspapers, archive files of unpublished materials, personal interviews, etc.).

Was André Lemoine’s “Adieu” used as a source? Start checking, on page 405. Persevere, if necessary, for the next eighteen pages.

C) “Index” issues (overlapping with "L, Unclear references, clumsy introductions,” see below) arose with these individuals & their entities:

Clare Booth Luce (American journalist, later congresswoman, & since 1935, wife of publisher Henry Luce); Alfred Duff Cooper (English prime minister Winston Churchill’s minister of information in 1940 & later, British ambassador to France, 1944-48);

Hans Thilo Schmidt (German civilian; traitor); a “General Schmidt” (brother of Hans); General Rudolf Schmidt (name found in the index & yet, not mentioned on the page provided; possibly but not necessarily the same person as “General Schmidt”);

“Rex” (French émigré from Germany, aka, “Stallman,” first name unknown & “Rodolphe Lemoine”; French spymaster “handler” of H.T. Schmidt); Paris-Soir (Parisian newspaper); & Belleville, a residential section of Paris.

D) The book’s wonderful map of Paris - executed perfectly with symmetry & grace - lacks a compass. This is necessary for readers to instantly see what the main routes were for the thousands of war refugees fleeing Belgium & Northern France flowing into & out of the French capital in 1940.

Other features of a book that should have NEVER been published:

E) Amateurish expositions; bad writing; cheap shots; factually dubious, contradictory or incorrect assertions; & illogical chronology:

- Cheap Shots: In the tragic context of a national (& international) catastrophe, was it necessary for Lottman to cattily remark that French PM Paul Reynaud looked like “Mickey Mouse”? (p. 10);

- Factually Dubious: King “Leopold’s [Belgium’s] surrender had been an act unprecedented in history” (p. 134; overlaps into “Wrong Words,” see "L," below), with “unprecedented” being employed to describe circumstances that common sense tells us were merely quite unusual);

- Factually Incorrect: “In the end, all of the [British, French, & Belgian] troops [initially stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk] got out of the trap [by naval evacuation]. Not a single soldier remained at Dunkirk to fall into German hands” (p. 170).

PN (03/21/12 Mercury/Mars Rx): From Quentin Reynolds "The Wounded Don't Cry" (1941) - "A lot of us think that England won the war at Dunkirk. She lost about 35,000 men. She should have lost 350,000 men" (p. 105). Unable to get on the boats (for whatever reason), some of those 35,000 soldiers must have been trapped at Dunkirk & taken prisoner.

F) “Gibberish”: “On February 26, after dark, enemy reconnaissance plans flew over the Paris region… that [same] night there were sirens – but no planes” (p. 6).

The German planes were UFOs. They might still be up there.

G) “Fop Speak”:

- Lottman’s constant narrative interruptions, “of course,” indeed,” “certainly” --- used after the point has already been made/is obvious.

H) Inane remarks; inept, confusing, ridiculous analogies & comparisons; incorrect or tortured verb tenses (with one dual qualifier, see "J, Not English”); incompetent usage of the word “but” (seriously!); & missing reflexive pronouns & run-on or incomplete sentences.

My favorite was “... surrounded on three sides” (p. 252).

I) The Quit While You're Ahead" rule, ignored:

“YOU ARE BITTER, DEFEATED… YOU SEE EVERYTHING IN BLACK! The remedy was Carter’s Little Liver Pills” (p. 186) – read a stock newspaper advertisement, with text left unchanged after May 10, 1940 & with Paris by June 4th reeling from the impending German attack on the French capital.

Untoppable. Stop. Not Lottman, who blathered on with an incomprehensible comment about another advertisement appearing on the same day.

J) “Not English” (with one dual qualifier, see "H, Incorrect or tortured verb tenses”); serial comma typing & other punctuation errors:

“The three officers held their pistols in outstretched arms, ready to expend their twenty-four bullets, but targets lacked” (p. 335. S/be, “but enemy soldiers did not appear.”).

K) Verbosity: Many margin notes to that effect; overall, it's obvious that the editor of "The Fall" had rounded up the usual perfunctory motions.

L) Unclear references, clumsy introductions & the inept introduction of full, formal names; words/phrases misplaced in sentences; & “Wrong Words.”

“Wrong Words”: Bonus, comically employed!

“An editorialist in the same [French newspaper,] ‘Le Figaro’… was aware of the frightful exodus [of civilian refugees & soldiers from defeated French divisions] from the north, resulting in traffic bottlenecks prejudicial to the military” (p. 123).

"Prejudicial" traffic jams. That's a hot one.

*****

The anecdote for “The Fall of Paris - June 1940”?

When you're done with Elliot Paul's "The Last Time I Saw Paris," next, read “Is Paris Burning?,” a superb history of the retaking of the city by Allied military forces in August 1944 (Larry Collins & Dominique Lapierre, co-authors, Simon & Schuster, 1965).

Post Note: The previous version of this review (amended on February 15, 2016) stated that Lottman had been a history professor at Harvard. This statement was incorrect & has been withdrawn, with my apology extended to those who may have read it & hence were misled.

Perfect Synopsis with External Links for more research!
By Epaminondas Peter Karelis
Great synopsis with links to reference/source material. As with any reference/study guide, you should do your "due diligence" and research exam topics in detail. The awesome thing about this book is that they have done the searching for you and point you to the information with the "Further Reading" external links that they provide!

This is not for the newbie network engineer, but as a CCIE that is re-certifying this book is perfect!

Only negative comments:
There are a few obvious typo's (ICMPv3 instead of IGMPv3).
Some over-simplifications within the STP section stating that blocking/listening/learning/forwarding are port states for all STP standards, when 802.1w/s use discarding/learning/forwarding states.

Green Tea and Other Ghost Stories (Dover Thrift Editions), by J. Sheridan LeFanu

Regarded as the Victorian era's greatest writer of ghost stories, J. Sheridan LeFanu (1814-73) gave expression to the fears and dread that often haunt sensitive individuals. This collection contains four of his finest ghost stories, each crafted with remarkable ingenuity and storytelling skill. The title story offers a petrifying account of an English cleric's bouts with a malignant spectral presence; "Squire Toby's Will" recounts a sibling rivalry and disputed inheritance; "The Fortunes of Sir Robert Ardagh" concerns a country gentleman's mysterious relationship with a sinister valet; and "Sir Dominick's Bargain" presents LeFanu's masterly variation on the theme of a pact with the devil.
All four tales embody not only the suspense and terror expected of a ghost story but also a subtlety, awareness, and psychological depth that elevate them far above most efforts in the genre. This inexpensive edition provides gripping entertainment as well as an excellent introduction to the intelligence and imagination that characterize LeFanu's work.

dusting off relics in the attic
By George Schaefer
This is another great find. Joseph Sheridan LeFanu was an Irish writer in the 19th Century. This thin selection of short stories is a tasty little collection. It is a forgotten art form: the ghost story but LeFanu does it quite well. This is Victorian age literature with guts. The tales are spooky but also reveal human psychology in the way great literature should. This is a classic of a bygone era. I will think twice when I hear footsteps in the attic and no one else is home. Many themes of suspense and terror are set down in these tales. Freddie Krueger can not hold a candle to tales like these.

LeFanu - Greatest Writer of Victorian Ghost Stories
By Michael Wischmeyer
Among the remarkable literary creations of the Victorian period are stories of ghosts and other supernatural phenomena. The tales of J. Sheridan LeFanu are highly regarded as among the best early examples of psychological horror stories. LeFanu was born in Dublin in 1814 and died there in in 1873.
LeFanu's style is indeed Victorian. The writing is more leisurely. Careful attention is paid to establishing the mood and atmosphere. Descriptions are more detailed. The sense of supernatural horror builds slowly, much like the tales of Poe.
The four entertaining ghost stories in this inexpensive Dover Thrift edition are a good introduction to the J. Sheridan LeFanu and include Green Tea, Squire Toby's Will, The Fortunes of Sir Robert Ardagh, and Sir Dominick's Bargain. In the Victorian style LeFanu presents his stories as actual facts, narratives found in old diaries, medical writings, or first hand accounts from family friends or loyal servants. His stories remain popular today, due largely to their psychological depth and subtlety.
In Green Tea Dr. Hesselius encounters a cleric suffering from periodic bouts of delusion, believing that he is being stalked by a malignant apparition.
Squire Toby and his two sons, Scroope Marston, the elder, and Charles Marston, his handsome brother, are all three despicable characters whose mutual hatred for each other apparently transcends the grave.
The Fortunes of Sir Robert Ardagh is told as two stories. The first is the legend and local lore of the peasants living near the secluded fortress Ardagh. The other is an eye witness, factual account, possibly even more chilling than the local legend.
Sir Dominick's Bargain is disturbing version of a man's pact with the devil.
Note: Is it LeFanu or Le Fanu? Both variations seemed to be equally common. This Dover edition uses the form J. Sheridan LeFanu. The Merriam Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature prefers Le Fanu with a space. Many computer search algorithms yield quite different results for these two nearly identical spellings.

Psychiatrists, get your teacup ready!
By JESPER SAMPAIO
LeFanu is by many considered the foremost of Victorian ghost story tellers, but (and I may now be incurring in literary sin) although his writing skills are undisputedly of the finest caliber, I did not find his stories as poignant and spine-tingling as Edgar Allen Poe's or his style as graceful and fluent as E. F. Benson's, for example; in fact, I'd say there is something a little bit too elaborate and artful about some of the passages in this book as if LeFanu had thought it worthwhile sacrificing the pleasure of reading to the exquisiteness of his occasionally almost labored literary expression. There are actually instances in which I find it difficult to picture the scenes and characters in the narrative - take the descriptions of the inside and outside of Gylingden Hall (story 2) or of Sir Ardagh's castle (story 4) - though I recognize that such impressions may of course be unjust and ensue not from the text but from the limitations of the reviewer himself.
The first and last of the four stories collected in this Dover edition are definitely the most exciting and convey a feeling of completeness which is rather absent from the second and third tales. A very striking feature of the story "Green Tea", for instance, is the razor-sharp precision with which LeFanu distinguishes between subjective and objective psychic realities, and between suggestion and predisposition. The reverend in the tale has suffered damage to the subtle involucre protecting his physical body against unwanted sensory impressions and the leaking out of vital force, and so has become permanently exposed not to hallucinations but to involuntary contacts with entities or energies pertaining to the lower psychic realms, the intimacy of which most of us are mercifully spared. The problem seems to be mendable by physically occluding the fissures produced in his natural defense and thus restoring his involucre to normality, but the reverend himself sees these deeply disquieting trials as a personal chastisement from God - an interpretation of the facts which is always a valid possibility - and eventually succumbs, not to the charges of the enemy but to his own weaknesses and inclinations. A complex and fine plot, indeed.
The story "Green Tea" should be carefully examined by all whose job it is to treat or otherwise help people who suffer from psychic disorders or claim to be haunted by hallucinations - and by those, of course, who love to spend a couple of hours by the fireplace with a mug of hot chocolate and a good yarn.

Great intro to Zen--in real life as well as martial arts
By magellan
First I'd like to address a couple of criticisms that I read here that this book is rather superficial and doesn't get into Zen concepts in depth. That's true, this book is really only an intro to Zen--if you're already knowledgeable then this book will probably be too basic. However, for the beginner there is no better place to start, and as someone else here observed, the quotes from Bruce Lee are almost worth the price of the book by themselves.
Joe Hyams started his karate training back in 1952 with Ed Parker--a full ten years or more before the craze got started in America. He had the opportunity to train with such greats as Bruce Lee, Bong Soo Han, Ed Parker, and Jim Lau from the very beginning. Joe encountered many trials and tribulations, frustrations, and disappointments during his training, but he never gave up. One reason is he often had the opportunity to discuss his problems with the many great teachers he trained under, and they often offered their wisdom and insights to help him through the difficult times. He took that wealth of personal experience and knowledge and put it all into this little book.
Hyams gives a very clear, concise, and easy to understand introduction to Zen in the martial arts. The discussions are often illustrated and liberally peppered with fun anecdotes from his personal experiences with different masters, making this almost a personal journey through the dojos and minds of some of the most famous martial artists of our time. Hyams writes very well (he was a famous Hollywood screenwriter) and so rather than another dry, obscure, Zen philosophy tome, the book sounds more like an intimate conversation with a friend over a glass of wine and dinner. It sounds like he's personally talking right to you.
Hyams touches on so many concepts that I won't try to discuss them much here. But I will mention probably the most important one--which is persistence. Hyams points out that it often isn't the most talented and gifted student that achieves the most in the martial arts--since they often quit the first time they encounter a serious difficulty--since they're so used to everything coming so easy. Rather, it's the person who often has very little going for him physically, and has the patience and perseverance to stick it through to the end.
I'll mention just one other important principle. This relates to the Zen idea of living in the moment, especially when training, but also in everything else one does in life. Don't allow other concerns, however pressing or important, to weigh on your mind and distract you when you're training. Concentrate on living in the present moment and you'll make the most of your training--and of all the other activities in your life. Someone who's always worried about their other concerns can't truly live in the present, and therefore will never truly enjoy or make the most of whatever activity they're engaged in. Part of their mind is always somewhere else. Strive to always live in the now, in the present moment.
Interestingly enough, this idea has been confirmed by modern psychological research. If you have concerns that worry you, don't allow them to bother you to the point where you're thinking about them all the time. The best way to deal with this, it's been found, is to set aside some time each day--they recommend 10, 15, or 20 minutes at most--where, if you need to--go ahead and worry yourself sick about it. Then put it out of your mind and enjoy the rest of your day. Another important thing you can do during this time is to not just worry about everything but to put some constructive thought into how to better deal with your problems. Sometimes you won't have a good idea about how to do that for a while, for days, maybe weeks, but don't let that get you down. Remember the other principle of persistence I mentioned earlier. Stick it through to the end.
Realistically, life is never as bad as it seems to us during our darkest and most depressed moments--nor as wonderful as it seems during our happiest, most ecstatic moments. It's somewhere in between. The point here is that one should also cultivate the proper attitude--since that's often the only thing one has total control over in one's life. If you're the sort of person for whom even little things get you down--which is more of us than we would like to admit--then strive to be more objective. The little things can't really hurt you. They're just annoying psychologically because they bruise our egos a little bit. Save your emotional energy for the really big problems in your life, instead--because there will be more than enough of those. Cultivate a positive, upbeat attitude so that the little things are practically beneath your notice. Let them slide off you like water off a duck's back. This is also another important Zen principle--that too much ego impedes our progress in the martial arts--and our path through life as well.
Well, I've gone on longer than I intended, but this book is so chock full of useful little tidbits of advice that I got a little carried away. So I'll just conclude by reiterating that Hyams has written a great little introduction to Zen concepts as applied to the martial arts. But perhaps even more important is that they can be applied beneficially to every other area of your life.

Zen You Can Ken +++
By Kevin Kiersky
"Zen in The Martial Arts" is Zen you can Ken [begin to understand]. Some folks may reckon that Zen should be very murky and mysterious and not really to be put into words. The word Zen, itself, is a short version of Zenna [Old Japan], matching Ch'anna [Old China] -- a translation of Dhyana [Old India]. This comes very close to "focusing" in English -- if we choose all the meanings of that word -- concentration, magnifying, centering, attention, intensity and so on. This seems to be both a main lesson [cause] and main virtue [effect] of mortal human living. One main Zen-following focuses on navel-breathing in Zazen -- "sitting" Zen. Another main Zen-following focuses on paradox-mystery poetry and prose -- which is said to be hard to "crack" via any just regular mind-set -- but after long intense focusing on the chosen target-words, the paradox-mystery [may] be "cracked". Many Zen-followers mix these methods. Yet, other Zen-followers "focus" via Fine Arts, including Martial Arts. I knew an older fellow from Japan who was a Zen Monk and also an Aikido Mentor. So, it is seen that, indeed, "focusing" is what Zen "focuses" on. As far as books go, "Zen in The Martial Arts" does go far -- in a way that can be focused-on by many folks. This compact book is chrystal-clear via themes in modest sections that complement one another +++

About the Author
Dan Burkholder was one of the first photographic artists to embrace digital technology in the early 1990s. True to his love of the traditional photograph, Dan uses digital technology to build images that still look and feel like real photographs, and his platinum prints are now included in many museum and private collections. Dan has taught classes and workshops at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the lnternational Center of Photography in New York, the University of Texas at San Antonio, the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego and others. Active with the Texas Photographic Society for many years, he is currently serving on the Advisory Board for this organization. Dan authored the award-winning book, Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printing, which is regarded as the most authoritative work in the field.

Take the Package
By Jennifer Henderson
This is an awesome book. I am familiar with Dan Burkholder because I took a Making Digital Negatives workshop from him in Montana a few years ago. He's an inspiring and very capable teacher in person and that same ability shows up in print. Most of the book focuses on the technical how-to. Dan's instructions are simple to follow particularly if you've just started iPhoneography. Though I've got enough experience with the iPhone to have published my own book on Blurb, I picked up quite a few additions to my repertoire from Dan such as the fun you can have with SketchMee and the compass function in ProCamera.

Dan's photographs throughout the book are incredibly lovely. They are so lovely that I'd like to know more about how those came about. Dan Marcolina in his book iPhone Obsessed: Photo editing experiments with Apps does a very good job of sharing his artistic intent for each image and the steps he took to get there. Put the 2 books together and you've got a great package.

Dan Burkholder has a workshop coming up at the Santa Fe Workshops for those who want an intensive introduction.

Enjoy!!!

Outstanding iPhone Photography Book
By Jerry Hug
Dan Burkholder produced one of the best teaching tools on the wonderful world of iPhoneography. First he give those hidden hints on how to use the iPhone and then addresses the creative use of iPhone Photo apps. He gives excellent examples of how he produced his own work. The title iPhone Artistry is truly the best title for the book. I highly recommend this book to all aspiring serious photographers who are entering the world of iPhone Photography. Jerry Hug

iPhone Creative Editing
By Christopher D. Mau
I really enjoyed this book and found it to be most helpful and highly recommend. Dan does a great job showing us a variety of Apps along with some of the advanced Apps and how to apply them in our workflow. Learn about curves, levels, masking and layers and how they can give your work a more distinct look vs all the basic "filter" Apps out there.

Definitely a great resource for anyone interested in "iPhoneography"
