Great introduction focused on scholarly economic research

Much is published on research in fields like business, sociology, education etc., but very little specifically for economics. This book is a step towards filling that gap (the other being the book by Don Ethridge), which is welcome, since economic research has its own challenges. Unlike the Ethridge book, this book does not get into the philosphy of science and avoids philosophical jargon (ontology, epistemics, etc...)

Greenlaw starts with an overview of the research process, from developing the question to communicating the results. He explains how to search economic literature - noting the sources that would be of particular interest to economic researchers - and a chapter on how to read and make sense of this literature. He spends two chapters on argument and writing, always putting the ideas in an economic context. Four of the 12 chapters deal with data issues: sources (mainly for the US), basic manipulation of data, empirical research design and regressions.

Economics has become increasingly mathematical, but this book spend only one chapter dealing with theorising and model-building in economics, and at a very basic level. Also, the discussion of regressions is also quite basic. This is not necessarily a weakness, as there are many young researchers who need a simple explanation of these areas to provide a foundation from which to develop their skills further.

I would recommend this book to any inexperienced economic researcher, and to economics professors who need to introduce their students to scholarly research in economics.

Potentially Useful for Advanced Undergrads

In an ideal world, an undergraduate economics major sitting down to write a thesis or participate in a capstone course would have already developed most of the statistical, academic writing, and critical reading skills taught in this book. But we don't live in an ideal world. So, I disagree with the reviewer who said this book is of use only to freshmen: I would also recommend it advanced undergrads and even beginning graduate students who need help learning to produce, and to present, scholarly work.

Unfortunately, the current edition is now five years old. So, while Greenlaw's discussion of online resources is good as far as it goes, it's probably time for a new edition. For example, while it's surprising that even the 2006 edition doesn't mention RePEc, the omission of RePEc and IDEAS is now a glaring hole in its coverage. Likewise, while Greenlaw properly refers the reader to other sources for detailed guidelines on citation styles, it's surprising that the word "blog" doesn't appear at all in the index, and this is a shortcoming that is even more significant today. Finally, a new edition of the book should address the use of personal bibliographic management software such as Zotero, BibTeX, RefWorks, and Endnote.

Very Helpful in Writing an Econ paper

I've had the honor and privilege of taking this class with the amazing Dr. Greenlaw himself. This book is the only I know of that actually takes a person through the process of how to start, work on, and complete a economics paper. Economics is very different than most other subjects, and figuring out where to start and how to get going once you know where to start can be extremely challenging. Dr. Greenlaw's book takes you through the entire process step by step. Literally all you have to do is to just follow this book, insert your data, and watch your paper come together.

Very impressive and highly informative

The Border Security is an impressive, highly informative, and stimulating textbook of factual information and collection of comprehensive essays on border studies and border security, accomplished by some of the best academics and researchers working in the field. In their new book, Border Security, James R. Phelps, Jeff Dailey, and Monica Koenigsberg team up and cover the core themes and issues related to border studies.

The authors explore the historical context of ancient boundaries, walled cities including the Great Wall of China and the ever-changing international borders that transform nations and cultural characteristics. They offer an array of views on Border Security Operations, Border Patrol (past and present), U.S. Customs, Immigration Services and Ports of Entry, Trafficking and Population Migrations, Smuggling, Economic Interdependence and Internet Crime, among others.

This book also tells us a great deal about the US-Mexico border, its history, the past, present and what the future holds. It explains the NFTA and cross-border freight movement and maquiladoras (a manufacturing operation in a free trade zone) as well as security concerns along checkpoints and highways. It offers an analysis of border patrol checkpoints, narcotraffickers and issues related to green cards, the Dream Act, guest workers, undocumented immigration and border crossing cards, along with Mexican-American and other related issues and concerns.

In short, Border Security is an extensive, detailed and powerful guide for lecturers, students, and researchers who pursue a career in Security Studies (Homeland, National and Border Security), as well as those who may consider a future teaching profession or just those who are interested in border security issue. I highly recommend this book.

Great starter for the history of border security applied to current issues

Border Security is an outstanding initial book for those who are either studying or wanting to know about border security and national security issues. The book lays a clear foundation from the start, laying out key differences between borders, barriers, and boundaries, but continues that on through a close inspection of border security between the US, Canada, and Mexico. The text provides a plethora of examples within a historic frame, citing hundreds, if not thousands of cases of border security practices and case studies. The authors of the book wrote this while still being able to remain apolitical and not succumbing to political bias. Because of this, I believe this book is a great starter for individuals wanting to understand the history and current practices of border security.

Regardless of this book's overarching explanation of border security, there are also some flaws. My biggest complaint is that the book was written by three authors. While I am certain that this aided to the amount of research and time that was able to be put into this book's publication, I believe it did make it somewhat more difficult to read. The books tone constantly changed as it was evident that each writer's style was different from the other. While this is a minor complaint at best, I do believe that the book could have been better if it was written by a single author.

As mentioned before, I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to gain a wider knowledge of the history and current practices of border security.

First and foremost, Border Security is a textbook. It’s a good textbook, but it’s not digestible enough for a larger audience. That’s unfortunate, because inside this textbook is the material for a very readable $20 (or less) book that would be very informative for laypeople and even law enforcement, academics, and policymakers looking to be more informed on this important subject.
There is some good history in this book. On pages 4-6 there is a brief overview of the Berlin Wall and lingering socioeconomic problems that persist 25 years after the wall fell. For those interested in geopolitics, the book is also cognizant of the role geography has played in shaping historical borders (pages 23, 30).
There is a section on comparative border security (pages 99-104) that I wish had been larger. Israel and Cyprus come to mind as additional subjects, but there are also some porous borders such as the Durand Line between Afghanistan and Pakistan and the nationalist sentiment in many nations of the European Union that could provide a comprehensive global perspective. The authors also acknowledge the progressive forces that may one day relegate borders to the past (page 52).
Sections on maritime security and special operations floored me with both breadth and depth of coverage. Part Two of the book, especially chapters six and seven, could by themselves be worked into an entire book for popular consumption. Part Three comprehensively covers the economic, legal, political, and logistical realities of the U.S.-Mexican border and one chapter even covers the often neglected Canadian border. The authors are also fair, giving the details of abuses that have opened U.S. Border Patrol agents to criticism (pages 90-91).
Richard Posner, the most widely cited federal jurist, questions whether the 14th Amendment should be read to permit so-called birth tourism. That’s on page 352. George Patton denouncing fixed fortifications is on page 23. If it has to do with border security, it’s probably in Border Security somewhere. I recommend this as a textbook for introductory courses to border security. It would also be good to see this material presented for a popular audience, in much the same way Peter Andreas has done in his books Border Games, Policing the Globe, and Smuggler Nation and Ted Galen Carpenter has done with Bad Neighbor Policy, The Fire Next Door, and Smart Power.

About the Author
Joseph O'Rourke is Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department, a Professor of Mathematics, and Director of Arts and Technology at Smith College. His research is in computational geometry, developing algorithms for geometric computations. He has won several awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1987 and the NSF Director's Award for Distinguished Teaching Scholars in 2001. He has published more than 145 papers in journals and conference proceedings, more than 30 of which were coauthored with undergraduates. He has taught folding and unfolding to students in grade school, middle school, high school, college and graduate school, and to teachers - of grade school, middle school, and high school - professors, and researchers. This is his sixth book.

Great book on linkages, origami, and polyhedra

The random pages from "Click to Look Inside" were good enough for me to order this book, and I was not disappointed. Good illustrations, good math, and good writing on every page.

For example, on page 138, he asks for the polyhedra other than a cube which can be folded from a Latin cross. He shows 7 tetrahedra, 3 pentahedra, 4 hexahedra, and 6 octahedra. He explains that this was unknown territory that he ventured into with 5 college students, and they made these discoveries.

Most of the book concerns older problems, such as linkages and origami, but there was plenty of newer material, such as robot arms and protein folding.

The supporting website is howtofoldit.org, which has some animations. Excellent book. Recommended.

Origami on steroids

I love origami and have always been curious as to the mathematical/scientific principles behind it. This book describes in depth the multitude of folds and angles involved in any folding project. It is a little beyond what I was looking for, giving super-detailed, extremely technical descriptions of the art of paper folding and then some. If you are looking for an explanation of folding, involving advanced mathematics, this is the book for you.

I really enjoyed Chapter 5 which includes some cool cutting projects - I call them "one-cut wonders" - they are available in template form on the book's webpage. Fun!!!

Dear Amazon Readers:

In The Reformed Vampire Support Group, I took the glamour out of vampires, portraying them as sickly, pathetic, farcical characters without a lot of energy or enthusiasm. I thought it would make for a funny book. And I was tired of people with power. I’m more interested in characters who aren’t glamorous or powerful—because I’m not glamorous or powerful myself.

The only people with any vim and vigor in that story weren’t vampires. One was an elderly mother and the other was a werewolf. The werewolf, Reuben, had a kind of cameo role, but he made a big impression on me. He was restless and troubled and slightly dangerous, and I felt that he deserved more attention than he got. That’s why I decided to write a sequel that would concentrate more on werewolves than on vampires. After all, people generally prefer dogs to bats. So why have vampires traditionally come off as more alluring and interesting than werewolves?

The Abused Werewolf Rescue Group is my attempt to explore more fully the world of werewolves, who suffer not from a contagious blood disease (like vampires) but from an inherited genetic condition. Since this condition manifests itself at puberty, I was also able to look at what happens when teenage boys start running in packs. I had fun doing that. And I enjoyed meeting up with Reuben again, as well as many of those sickly vampires who’d populated the first book.

I hope you’ll feel the same way I do and get a kick out of revisiting characters who take all the mystique out of the paranormal. In fact, I hope you enjoy this book more than the first. The action in the sequel is a little more chaotic, because the characters have a lot more fizz—and because some of them are flat-out crazy. But at least they don’t spend most of their time watching TV and puking in bathrooms, like the poor old vampires!

If you enjoy The Abused Werewolf Rescue Group enough, I might even write one more, and make this series a trilogy! But I’ll have to see how my readers react to this book first...
