Vietnamese Zen Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh usually presents teachings simply and often lyrically. This book, a translation and commentary on teachings of the Chinese master Linji, a founder of the Zen tradition, is not so simple and not very lyrical. But there's a good reason. Linji was one of those Zen masters who was given to paradox, shouting at students and employing cryptic behaviors and words. As Nhat Hanh helpfully notes, Reading his words is like taking a very strong medicine. So the contemporary Zen master is, comparatively, a more penetrable guide to his predecessor, as a commentator ought to be. The text calls on Nhat Hanh's scholarly abilities. He is more than a humble monk, and this side of him is much less familiar to his many readers. He is able to encapsulate Linji's philosophy in his characteristically memorable way: the enlightened person has nothing to do, nowhere to go. Also true to form, he offers easy breathing practices based on what Linji says. The book could be better organized; the text and commentaries are in separate chapters, necessitating a lot of flipping back and forth. This book is fresh and stimulating for advanced Zen practitioners. (Oct.)

NOTHING TO DO, NO MORE BOOKS TO BUY

This is my favorite book on Buddhism. Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go is a book about the teachings of Linji who lived in the 800's in China, with commentary by Thich Nhat Hanh. For most of us we are always seeking outside of ourselves: the next date, movie, job, degree, book, workshop and of course gaining approval from others. Most of the teachings of Linji are so simple they are easy to grasp after a few readings: There is nothing you have to do to improve yourself, you are already what you are searching for, just have confidence in yourself and stop the constant searching, the truth is not in words or concepts, but in living simply in the present moment. Just breath, eat, sit, sleep and work. I highly recommend this book for all seekers.

Thich Nhat Hanh is a direct Dharma heir of Lin-chi, thirty fourth generation I understand. There are few Masters in the our present world who manifest such enlightened activity as does he and many contemporary Buddhists regard him as a fully enlightened Buddha. I recently had the opportunity to attend a retreat led by him in Ha Noi. Remarkably, this was in the company of my own master, Daido Hogen Yamahata, who chose this opportunity to receive the precepts from Thich Nhat Hanh.

In this book, Thich Nhat Hanh reveals to us the deep wisdom and compassion of Lin-chi in a way that one who is of the same mind is able to do. Enlightenment is the union of compassion and wisdom. Aimlessness is one of the three doors of liberation.In studying the writings of the great ancestors and patriarchs of Zen, we must be very careful not to confuse the words used with the intention behind them.

Thich Nhat Hanh shows us Lin-chi's heart and mind and does so in a way that is immediate and profound. This book is the true samadhi of words.

Helping Us Be, Not Do

I have never met a book by Thich Nhat Hanh I did not like, but this book is particularly important in elucidating the work of a master teacher, Master Linji, which can readily be misunderstood without careful and insightful commentary. As a long-time meditator new to Buddhist scholarship, I found it very useful in bringing together universal concepts from different traditions in a way I could grasp and use. As always, even if the material is dense, Thay's voice is light, kind, and helpful.

This study explores the relation between Samuel Beckett s five major novels Murphy, Watt, Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnamable and the phenomenon that Lyotard, Habermas, and Vattimo have described as the end of modernity. Through close readings of Beckett s pentalogy, the author shows how these novels, written between 1935 and 1950, strikingly anticipate many of the defining themes and ideas of Barthes, Foucault, and Derrida from madness and the cogito to the death of the author and the end of the book, from diffZrance and unnamability to the end of man and the beginning of writing. The book begins by situating Beckett in relation to a postmodern philosophical tradition, largely defined by Nietzsche and Heidegger, and a modern literary tradition, most notably represented by Proust and Joyce. The author argues against the tendency to treat the postmodern as the negation of Enlightenment thinking, a form of overcoming in which the modern is replaced by the anti-modern. In the place of this antithetical postmodernism, the author proposes a diffZrantial postmodernism. Especially important in this regard is Derrida s claim that there is never any question of choosing between modernity (what he calls Western metaphysics) and some term of opposition (the overcoming of metaphysics). Rather, Derrida recommends practicing a new writing which simultaneously brings together two kinds of deconstruction one that works critically within the tradition and one that projects itself imaginatively beyond the tradition.
