Great intro to Zen--in real life as well as martial arts
By magellan
First I'd like to address a couple of criticisms that I read here that this book is rather superficial and doesn't get into Zen concepts in depth. That's true, this book is really only an intro to Zen--if you're already knowledgeable then this book will probably be too basic. However, for the beginner there is no better place to start, and as someone else here observed, the quotes from Bruce Lee are almost worth the price of the book by themselves.
Joe Hyams started his karate training back in 1952 with Ed Parker--a full ten years or more before the craze got started in America. He had the opportunity to train with such greats as Bruce Lee, Bong Soo Han, Ed Parker, and Jim Lau from the very beginning. Joe encountered many trials and tribulations, frustrations, and disappointments during his training, but he never gave up. One reason is he often had the opportunity to discuss his problems with the many great teachers he trained under, and they often offered their wisdom and insights to help him through the difficult times. He took that wealth of personal experience and knowledge and put it all into this little book.
Hyams gives a very clear, concise, and easy to understand introduction to Zen in the martial arts. The discussions are often illustrated and liberally peppered with fun anecdotes from his personal experiences with different masters, making this almost a personal journey through the dojos and minds of some of the most famous martial artists of our time. Hyams writes very well (he was a famous Hollywood screenwriter) and so rather than another dry, obscure, Zen philosophy tome, the book sounds more like an intimate conversation with a friend over a glass of wine and dinner. It sounds like he's personally talking right to you.
Hyams touches on so many concepts that I won't try to discuss them much here. But I will mention probably the most important one--which is persistence. Hyams points out that it often isn't the most talented and gifted student that achieves the most in the martial arts--since they often quit the first time they encounter a serious difficulty--since they're so used to everything coming so easy. Rather, it's the person who often has very little going for him physically, and has the patience and perseverance to stick it through to the end.
I'll mention just one other important principle. This relates to the Zen idea of living in the moment, especially when training, but also in everything else one does in life. Don't allow other concerns, however pressing or important, to weigh on your mind and distract you when you're training. Concentrate on living in the present moment and you'll make the most of your training--and of all the other activities in your life. Someone who's always worried about their other concerns can't truly live in the present, and therefore will never truly enjoy or make the most of whatever activity they're engaged in. Part of their mind is always somewhere else. Strive to always live in the now, in the present moment.
Interestingly enough, this idea has been confirmed by modern psychological research. If you have concerns that worry you, don't allow them to bother you to the point where you're thinking about them all the time. The best way to deal with this, it's been found, is to set aside some time each day--they recommend 10, 15, or 20 minutes at most--where, if you need to--go ahead and worry yourself sick about it. Then put it out of your mind and enjoy the rest of your day. Another important thing you can do during this time is to not just worry about everything but to put some constructive thought into how to better deal with your problems. Sometimes you won't have a good idea about how to do that for a while, for days, maybe weeks, but don't let that get you down. Remember the other principle of persistence I mentioned earlier. Stick it through to the end.
Realistically, life is never as bad as it seems to us during our darkest and most depressed moments--nor as wonderful as it seems during our happiest, most ecstatic moments. It's somewhere in between. The point here is that one should also cultivate the proper attitude--since that's often the only thing one has total control over in one's life. If you're the sort of person for whom even little things get you down--which is more of us than we would like to admit--then strive to be more objective. The little things can't really hurt you. They're just annoying psychologically because they bruise our egos a little bit. Save your emotional energy for the really big problems in your life, instead--because there will be more than enough of those. Cultivate a positive, upbeat attitude so that the little things are practically beneath your notice. Let them slide off you like water off a duck's back. This is also another important Zen principle--that too much ego impedes our progress in the martial arts--and our path through life as well.
Well, I've gone on longer than I intended, but this book is so chock full of useful little tidbits of advice that I got a little carried away. So I'll just conclude by reiterating that Hyams has written a great little introduction to Zen concepts as applied to the martial arts. But perhaps even more important is that they can be applied beneficially to every other area of your life.

Zen You Can Ken +++
By Kevin Kiersky
"Zen in The Martial Arts" is Zen you can Ken [begin to understand]. Some folks may reckon that Zen should be very murky and mysterious and not really to be put into words. The word Zen, itself, is a short version of Zenna [Old Japan], matching Ch'anna [Old China] -- a translation of Dhyana [Old India]. This comes very close to "focusing" in English -- if we choose all the meanings of that word -- concentration, magnifying, centering, attention, intensity and so on. This seems to be both a main lesson [cause] and main virtue [effect] of mortal human living. One main Zen-following focuses on navel-breathing in Zazen -- "sitting" Zen. Another main Zen-following focuses on paradox-mystery poetry and prose -- which is said to be hard to "crack" via any just regular mind-set -- but after long intense focusing on the chosen target-words, the paradox-mystery [may] be "cracked". Many Zen-followers mix these methods. Yet, other Zen-followers "focus" via Fine Arts, including Martial Arts. I knew an older fellow from Japan who was a Zen Monk and also an Aikido Mentor. So, it is seen that, indeed, "focusing" is what Zen "focuses" on. As far as books go, "Zen in The Martial Arts" does go far -- in a way that can be focused-on by many folks. This compact book is chrystal-clear via themes in modest sections that complement one another +++

Take the Package
By Jennifer Henderson
This is an awesome book. I am familiar with Dan Burkholder because I took a Making Digital Negatives workshop from him in Montana a few years ago. He's an inspiring and very capable teacher in person and that same ability shows up in print. Most of the book focuses on the technical how-to. Dan's instructions are simple to follow particularly if you've just started iPhoneography. Though I've got enough experience with the iPhone to have published my own book on Blurb, I picked up quite a few additions to my repertoire from Dan such as the fun you can have with SketchMee and the compass function in ProCamera.

Dan's photographs throughout the book are incredibly lovely. They are so lovely that I'd like to know more about how those came about. Dan Marcolina in his book iPhone Obsessed: Photo editing experiments with Apps does a very good job of sharing his artistic intent for each image and the steps he took to get there. Put the 2 books together and you've got a great package.

Dan Burkholder has a workshop coming up at the Santa Fe Workshops for those who want an intensive introduction.

Enjoy!!!

Outstanding iPhone Photography Book
By Jerry Hug
Dan Burkholder produced one of the best teaching tools on the wonderful world of iPhoneography. First he give those hidden hints on how to use the iPhone and then addresses the creative use of iPhone Photo apps. He gives excellent examples of how he produced his own work. The title iPhone Artistry is truly the best title for the book. I highly recommend this book to all aspiring serious photographers who are entering the world of iPhone Photography. Jerry Hug

iPhone Creative Editing
By Christopher D. Mau
I really enjoyed this book and found it to be most helpful and highly recommend. Dan does a great job showing us a variety of Apps along with some of the advanced Apps and how to apply them in our workflow. Learn about curves, levels, masking and layers and how they can give your work a more distinct look vs all the basic "filter" Apps out there.

Definitely a great resource for anyone interested in "iPhoneography"

A wonderfully illustrated look at Alexander the Great
By Lawrance Bernabo
Robin Lane Fox considers Alexander the Great to be the world's first authentic hero. Having retraced Alexander's 10 year, 11,000-mile march in carving out his empire and written a prize-winning biography, "Alexander the Great," the author certainly has the credentials to back up this particular book. "The Search for Alexander" emphasizes the conqueror's personality, motivation, and incredible ambition that consistently overcame severe obstacles of geography, weather, morale, and food supply. Consequently, this book reads more like a detective story, sifting through the historical record to make his best case for what really happened and why. "The Search for Alexander" contains more than 220 photographs, 135 in full cover, including striking pictures of the royal tombs discovered at Vergina, Greece in 1977, which Lane Fox argues is the burial place of Alexander's father, Philip II. If you have even a passing interest in the subject, this is a fascinating book, whether you are content just to look at the pictures or are really interested in the historiography involved in this volume.

Well worth the money!
By Carolyn
I thoroughly enjoyed Robin Lane Fox's book "The Search for Alexander". The book was very interesting and informative and the photographs were outstanding. The only thing I was disappointed in was on page 68 is a photo of the head of a statue that might be Hephaestion, and it is placed too close to the edge of the page so that the nose is cut off. I have also read Mr. Fox's books "Alexander the Great" and "The Making of Alexander". I have enjoyed reading and re-reading all three of his books. I find Mr. Fox to be a very likeable man and his books are very fair to Alexander. I highly recommend all of Robin Lane Fox's books.

Decent read... Much better and well written accounts of all things Alexander out there. If you're a fanatic of that time period like myself, its worth the read - if this is your first book on the subject, look elsewhere.

Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America's Youth, by Ben Shapiro

Brainwashed is the explosive exposé of the leftist agenda at work in today's colleges, revealed by firebrand Ben Shapiro, a recent UCLA gratudate, syndicated columnist, and one of today's most exciting new conservative voices, who's been on the front lines of the battle for America's young minds. This book proves once and for all that so-called higher education continues to sink lower and lower into the depths of liberal madness as close-minded professors turn their students into socialists, atheists, race-baiters, and sex-crazed narcissists.

"Ben Shapiro's writing is smart, informative, and incisive.  He is wise byond his years without losing the refreshing fearlessness of youth." ?Ann Coulter, best-selling author of High Crimes and Misdeameanors, Slander, and Treason

"In Brainwashed, Shapiro tells the truth?that universities are forums of left-liberal indoctrination, where dissent is discouraged and penalized, with more restrictions on free speech rather any other part of American society. Parents who are paying for tutition might want to take note, and see what their hard-earned money is paying for." ?Michael Barone, U.S. News & World report and co-author of The Almanac of American Politics

"Welcome to P.C. 101. In ths trenchant insider's expose, Ben Shapiro bears witness to the modern American campus freak show. You'll get up close and personal with the Marxist loons, moral relativists, multicultural zealots, and American-haters who are corrupting young minds. Brainwahed reveals the ignominious lows to which higher education has sunk. Get deprogrammed.   Buy this book!" ?Michelle Malkin, nationally syndiated columnist and author of Invasion

"Sharp thinking, tight writing, crazy-but-true stories:  Ben Shapiro sees campus brainwashing and raises a national protest. This is a good book to give both freshmen who need warning and voters/alumni who need to take action." ?Dr. Marvin Olasky, University of Texas professor and editor-in-chief of World magazine

"A worthy successor to God and Man at Yale and Harvard Hates America in exploring the bely of the academic beast." ?David Horowitz, founder of Students for Academic Freedom and author of Radical Son and Left Illusions

"What Animal House did for the toga party, Brainwashed should do for American resistance to campus radicalism." ?Rusty Humphries, nationally syndicated radio talk show host

Insightful book with a lot of truth
By Maria Castelli
Shapiro's book is on-point with so much. I wish I'd written this book several years ago when I was still in college, and then grad school. It would have helped to quell the frustration I felt at being swept up in the liberal tides that my schools assumed everyone supported simply because we were academics.
I think it's great that there are liberal professors in colleges with far-out ideas. However, there seemed to be (in my experience and, apparently in Shapiro's as well) a false premise in colleges that you must be a liberal in order to be an academic. Further, professors, and other students, often get quite angered if you express a view that is not shared by the class or considered politically incorrect. By the time college is over you become adept at couching and qualifying your statements in order to keep the peace in class and avoid being labeled "right-wing", "intolerant", "fascist", et. al. Admitting that you supported the president or were a Republican, for example, was tantamount to academic suicide in my scholastic career. The irony never escaped me and apparently it didn't escape Shapiro either.

You definitely get the sense that Shapiro is venting his frustrations at being silenced during his college years - as well he should. He seems somewhat bitter at times, which some may find off-putting. Nonetheless, I think this book was probably therapeutic for Shapiro to write since he endured so many attempts to silence him in college. He channeled his frustrations quite well by writing this book. Is the book perfect? Of course not - but he takes good care to back up its assertions with painstakingly researched documentation and footnotes. On the whole, it is a noteworthy book.
I entered college a Democrat, and it was my experience in higher education that made me a Republican by the time I finished my MA in '03. I was simply turned off by the lack of tolerance allowed to ideas that departed from the leftist platform. In turn, I became suspicious, and eventually resentful, of the implicitly (and explicitly) stated assumption that, by virtue of being a college student, you should support liberal agendas. I still think people in this country are deluded by labels. I consider myself "liberal" in the sense that I like to consider and discuss all ideas before arriving at my opinions on an issue. However, since all ideas were not given credence in the classroom, I realized what a misnomer the word has become. Kudos to Shapiro for being willing to discuss this openly and defend the importance of critical thinking.
On a side note, I had a very difficult time finding this book at Borders. It was stocked in a remote, low-traffic area of the store, in a section called "Parenting and Education" (near baby name books and such).
When I tried to pay for it, the cashier looked at the book, gave me a patronizing laugh, and (without being asked) volunteered to tell me why she "would not agree with it at all", being a 20 year-old college student herself. When I explained that Shapiro was actually also 20 and just graduating college, she told me that he surely must be making "sweeping generalizations" about the college experience and how he, a 20 year-old, could not possibly write such a "scholarly book, and pretend he's like...this scholar or something". She got really mad! I suggested we both read the book before pontificating about whether or not he's justified for writing it (which of course he is) and she finally shut up, and I was able to escape. Be careful what you try to buy at Borders! You might not find it, or be subjected to a liberal rant as a reward for shopping there.

Entertaining and eyeopening...
By A Customer
I've only taken 3 courses in community college. My first two were critical thinking and C++ and I experienced no liberal bias. My 3rd class was American Government taught by a Liberal Socialist Feminist. This was my first and only experience with what Shapiro wrote about. This teacher actually made us purchase her $20 book, which was nothing but 85 pages printed and binded by the school print shop. It was all about how the government should pay for 100% of day care for women and pass laws for mandantory 4 years of maturnity leave. About 20% of my final was based on what was in that book.
She assigned us an assignment where we had to go out and pretty much preach her agenda to someone and then write an essay about it. Didn't matter if we agreed with her, we had to do it. When asked by a male student if he could preach against her agenda, he was told he would be failed on the assignment.
I talked with her about this privately while I walked with her to the campus parking lot. I asked her if she was being fair. Her response was "you must be a republican". I said yes even though I'm an independent. Her exact words were "I'll convert you..." stopped walking, stared, then nodded, "I'll convert you.".
I guess it's a good thing I waited till I was 26 to go to college. It's even better that one of my first classes was critical thinking.
I've been in the real world long enough to know not to believe things people say. Especially when they don't back it up with evidence or supporting opinions. This book has both. It's a great read if you're a conservative. If you're a liberal, it's going to piss you off when you realize you were brainwashed. It explains the one stars. I can completely understand the liberals hatred for this book. How would you react if you suddenly became aware of the fact that everything you believe in is wrong and you only believe in it because you were brainwashed. Kind of makes you feel like you're on the bottom of the food chain.

I just read this
By Liza P
Interesting book. I finished it last night and this is an enjoyable read. Shapiro is funny and his points are well made. I myself have spent a few years going after a graduate degree and having had my first 4 years of college in Japan I was suprised with American universities.
There is a review below from a someone from Buena Vista University who makes a good case against the observations in this book. I agree with M. Steel in his claims that this is the way colleges SHOULD work. Unfortunately they do not work like this. Instead of openness I have found the universities I attended in the USA ( 3 of them ) to be the exact opposite of openness. Instead of rejoicing in varied opinions, have the "wrong" opinion will get you flunked. There are no frank and open debates - there is "my way or the highway".
We have campus "speech codes" which suppress debate, we have campus groups destroying flyers for speakers or campus clubs that are not "politically correct" and no debate is tolerated.
I have seen speakers heckled and as one reviewer mentioned about a John Stossel 20/20 segment he was yelled down and not permitted to talk to students with the "wrong" opinion. All viewpoints are not explored only the "correct" ones.
I would be inclined to agree with Steel on the points made if my experience had not been so different. I wa told flat out on several occasions by students and professions that I was no to mention certain things nor was I to ask certain questions.
Based on my own first hand experiences I am inclined to accept Shapiros observations. I have heard thes from others and have seen it on 20/20. I have found that this is typical and not an exception.
Nowhere have I ever seen free speech so suppressed and discouraged than in the American University system and this does not bode well for the future.
Excellent book. Shold be read by all, and not just people who have college aged children I would encourage employers to note what having a university degree really means today. Maybe they already have based on the current high level of outsourcing seen today in American business. Perhaps employers are seeing the quality of American college graduates today and reacting accordingly.

The suppression continues
By A Customer
With such a wealth of irrefutable UFO evidence, why after 25 years is there still such a strong cover-up? Perhaps this is the core of the book - The US Air Force and CIA have been so determined to keep the truth from the world they will call black - white, as they did with the Condon Report (Donald appears almost bitter about this). It is interesting that this book managed to be published when, as Donald relates, so many similar books failed. A cracking read, a must for everyone. How can the authorities defend themselves?

Chapter 9 -- Giant Spaceships
By Reid M. Wilson
Chapter 9 -- Giant Spaceships (pages 127 -- 141) is the most interesting chapter in Donald E. Keyhoe's Aliens From Space book. The chapter starts with Soviet astronomers' observation of huge flying crescents in 1967 that were calculated to be between 1,640 to 1,840 feet in size and to have a speed of 11,160 miles per hour. Keyhoe then describes a February 15, 1965 encounter between a Flying Tiger airliner chartered by the Defense Department and three gigantic UFOs over the Pacific Ocean; an Air Force officer who had viewed the UFOs estimated their size to be nearly 2,000 feet. Keyhoe also describes radar tracking of huge objects over the Washington, D.C. area on May 5-6, 1954 and June 12 and 14, 1954 at altitudes of 90,000 and 79,000 feet respectively, including a chilling quote from a pursuing fighter pilot, who, along with other pilots, was scared by the giant ship. From 1952, there is a report of an Air Force bomber crew tracking a UFO formation at 5,240 miles per hour over the Gulf of Mexico and then being paced by another UFO formation before seeing the smaller UFOs merging on radar with a giant ship, which then accelerated to a speed of over 9,000 miles per hour. This chapter has the most meaningful information about UFOs in the book. In scanning through the other chapters, they appear to be a rambling criticism of the Air Force over the concealment of information issue and a theorizing of possibilities.

I don't want it to be OVER!!!
By Kathie @First Page to the Last Book Reviews
This is the last book in the Dark Protectors' Series by Ms. Zanetti. I could hardly wait to read Janie and Zane's story. We've been seeing bits and pieces of it throughout the series and this book is the climax the arc. And what a climax it was! We got to see all the characters from the previous books. Everyone had a role to fill, and they did it marvelously.

While I had my guess about who, and what, Zane would be, Ms. Zanetti kept the twists and turns coming. This was one continuous adventure. I am very impressed how she tied things up. I was left feeling satisfied, especially with all the little insights into our favorite couples the epilogue gave us. And then she gave us a hint for maybe another book later on! Ah, good times.

There was humor, pages of intensity, moments of joy, paragraphs of fear...and it was all twisted up in a wonderful reading package. I read it in one sitting. Yes, it was that good. We have all been waiting for the culmination of the story, and it was worth the wait.

But then she was mean. After the end of Marked, she gives us a teaser for her next series, The Realm Enforcers. I need it NOW!

I highly recommend this book. In fact, you really can't go wrong with any of her series. Yes, she's that good.

*Thank you, Netgalley and Kensington, for the opportunity to read Marked.

Satisfying in every way
By Jen (Red Hot Books)
This book was absolutely everything I hoped it would be. Like so many other fans of the Dark Protectors series, I have been waiting anxiously for Janie's story. We've been teased with bits and pieces for years. We have known her since she was just four years old; we've followed her as she has become more powerful and as she has come closer and closer to fulfilling her destiny. We've caught glimpses of her connections to Zane and Kalin. And it's all led up to this. I am getting excited all over again just thinking about it.

The story begins with the big peace talks among all of the supernatural factions and it's there that Janie, Zane, and Kalin all meet in person for the very first time. And we finally learn who --and what-- Zane really is. From their very first interaction, Rebecca Zanetti drives home the differences between how everyone is in the dreamworld versus reality. Everything is no longer hazy and hopeful. Zane is dark and deadly and Janie has to quickly come to terms with the fact that the Zane of her fantasies is a flesh and blood man with his own loyalties and baggage that are part of the package.

I love that there is more to Zane than meets the eye. He is just a touch more caveman than my taste generally dictates. (The only thing in the whole book I would have changed was the obligatory spanking "to teach her a lesson.") But overall, he is not nearly as overbearing as the heroes in the early books of the series. I appreciate that he gives Janie credit where she's due and he doesn't ignore what she can bring to the table.

The romance was 100% satisfying, both emotionally and sexually. But there is just as much to be said about the larger story arc. This book is the culmination of all the fighting, scheming and atrocities among the demons, kurjans, witches, vampires and shifters. It's positively explosive and it went in a direction I never saw coming. It was fantastic. I was on the edge of my seat from the beginning to end. There is a ton of action and it's filled with twists and turns.

The ending is 100% satisfying in every way. Not only is the main arc wonderfully resolved and the romance full of HEA goodness, we get to spend some time with every single couple we have fallen in love with over the course of the series. I can't think of any way she could have done this better. Fans are going to love this book. I know I sure did.

Excellent conclusion to a phenomenal series!
By angelblue
I have been a huge fan of the Dark Protectors series from day one and Marked was a fantastic conclusion to an amazing series, and as much as I hate to see it end I wouldn't change a thing. And now comes the hard part, writing a review without any spoilers. I don't want to ruin a moment of the book for you because it's going to take you on a roller coaster ride that you won't forget!

Janie Kayrs has been meeting Zane in her dreams since they were children. And although I was pretty confident that they would end up together, I wasn't sure how Kalin was going to factor in.

Zane was arrogant, possessive, stubborn, protective and the best freaking alpha male that I have read about in a long time! Janie was the one prophesied about, a human girl with powerful visions that the different factions wanted to either protect or kill. And even though she was a human surrounded by supernaturals it came down to her saving them all.

Virus 27 is still around wrecking havoc on the mates but it has taken a sinister twist during the peace talks that put into motion something that I did not expect. My stomach was in knots the entire time and just when you thought that there may be a light at the end of the tunnel.... bam... it just gets infinitely worse. All I can say is that there was some seriously ugly crying going on near the end.

Get your tissues ready and maybe a glass of wine or three to help calm your nerves because you're going to need it once you start reading it. Marked is packed full of action, passion, conflict, tenderness and tears and has exceeded all of my expectations for a finale to this phenomenal series.
