Not Helpful for the Board Exam

K&S's self-examination book is not a board-review book, and because K&S for better or worse has developed the title of "THE" textbook for psychiatry, several psychiatrists gravitate towards this book thinking it's "THE" book for the board examination.
Material: The book is packed with material that is not on the board-exam. Several theories, terms, and guidelines, if seen in this book could mislead one into thinking it's high-yield when in fact it is no-yield due to the unofficial title K&S enjoys as the leading psychiatric textbook. If you happen to take a look at the book and see the terms recommended for memorization, you'll see "forme fruste" among several other terms never to be seen in the real exam, and will only serve to weigh you down.
Poor presentation: It's not concise. You'll spend more time than needed because it's not presented in a clear and to-the-point manner. Things that other guides have in bullet or chart format that occupy 1/4 of a page might be explained over several paragraphs.
Questions: Not similar to what you'll encounter on the board-exam. As many psychiatrists will know at this level of training, other sources have made attempts to make their questions similar in rhetorical presentation, style, and material. K&S doesn't do that.
So yes, it's not a good board-review book, but how does it rate if you want to be just a good psychiatrist? Even there it has problems. Several of the answers don't have references to the published evidence as to why it's right, it has terms no one uses, so if you do happen to memorize them, you'll likely be the only one knowing these extraneous terms that are not necessary to effectively practice. I've talked to highly respected, published, nationally ranked doctors on many of these terms and they haven't heard of them.

What I like about it is the editing is well-done. Many other guides have grammatical errors. The questions are also all correct. Some guides have a wrong answer here-or-there. If you do happen to like K&S, and a few doctors do, and like reading it for pleasure or reference, that's where this book may be useful.

My favorite review book

I've used Kaplan/Saddock textbook and review questions since the beginning of residency and, after checking out other review books, think it is still the most comprehensive review book around. It has 1500 questions covering every area of psychiatry. The questions have VERY detailed answers and have obviously been well researched. At the eginning of each chapter is a glossary of 'must know' terms which I also found helpful for review. The book was quite sufficient for me to pass the Psychiatry Boards. Great if you don't have time to review the whole textbook. Have not used it for MOC ( yet). MOC is supposed to be very clinically oriented. There is a new edition of this book ( as of 11/2012)and I hope it will have been edited to contain clinical content pertaining more specifically to Maintenance of Certification exams, will certainly check it out when the time comes...

EVEN BETTER THAN THE OLD ONE!

This is a good, straightforward and fairly literal translation, with helpful notes -- not too many, but useful. I much prefer it to the work of Walter Kaufmann which has for a long time been standard fare for university reading. Walter was better than the Nazified edition with the author's sister to speak for him. But there is a great deal of self-important nonsense by Mr. Kaufmann in his edition. Here we have a fine translation that may well become the new university standard, at least it is for me.

Rescuing Religion from the Death of the Creator-God

“Hold your highest hopes holy,” says Nietzsche in one breath, and “God is dead” in another. For Nietzsche the creator God is forever gone. But the God that represents man’s highest hopes and aspirations remains very much alive.

What Nietzsche’s Zarathustra fears most is that creator-man will die along with his creator-God, leaving nothing but “the last man” who has transformed himself into a mere component of an orderly industrial machine. The last man “makes all things small,” including himself. He no longer aspires to create something great, but only to play his tiny part in the machine. The last man enjoys his entertainment, but he wants to make sure it too remains small and superficial. “He's careful that his entertainment never takes hold of him.”

When duty makes man small, as it does in an industrial society that asks him to become a gear in a vast machine, man must cast a “holy no” in the face of duty. Creating freedom is the first step of all creativity. In the past man put “thou shalt” in his holiest place. “Now he must find frenzy and willfulness in his holiest place.” Creativity demands saying no to the duty that makes man small, and then “a new beginning, a first movement, a holy yes-saying.”

“If you can’t be the holy men of insight, at least be its warriors, the vehicles and harbingers of its holiness.” Nietzsche envisions a new religion where all the piety and reverence we had once directed to the unknown God is directed to a God of insight. He wants us to retain all the evangelical fervor we have lavished on the gospel, but now directed toward a new gospel of creative searching.

What is most praiseworthy is what is most difficult. The next step on the path to greatness is the one that leads uphill. You will invariably seem eccentric. No one will understand your path except the friend willing to walk beside you.

“To value is to create.” The last man no longer creates. So he can no longer value. What his neighbor seems to value, the last man avidly adopts as his own value. But his neighbor doesn’t create either. The carcasses of dead values circulate in place of living ones. And the stench is overwhelming.

“You must want to burn up in your own flame. How will you become new if you haven't first turned to ashes?” Nietzsche, like Jesus, wants his disciples to die to the world and be born again. Baptism of fire prepares us for a new life of courageous creativity.

Great book, very good translation

I believe Nietzsche saw his "Zarathurstra" as his magnum opus, the artistic-expressive summary of his beliefs.

It is a wonderful book, and anyone who has read his other works will find that "Zarathustra" really does synthesize and summarize those other works.

The challenge with "Zarathustra" and Nietzsche's other works, is the depth and breadth of his experience and scholarship. The more I read his works, the more I realize I miss...and to some degree must miss! I have a limited background in Classical studies, but not to the extent Nietzsche did. As another for-instance - I do not speak or read French or Italian, and so I can only analytically understand Nietzsche's statements about the cadences of those languages, and their connection to their local habitats, and the way they both reflect and influence their speakers' demeanors. Oh well! Something to shoot for, for me, I guess, to learn Spanish and French....and, German?!

This is a very good translation with good end-notes. There are some references I think the translator missed, but that's ok.

The approach is fairly standard: escorting the reader through each stage, discussing what to choose and what not to (e.g., why a belt-driven turntable is preferable to direct drive), home maintenance, etc. But while nontechnical, the book presents considerable detail, more than in other good recent works on the topic, such as Ivan Berger and Hans Fantel's The New Sound of Stereo ( LJ 5/15/86). A slightly dated but VERY worthwhile audio guide!

A friend of mine loaned this book to me around 1991 and I have yet to thank him enough. I was buying my first stereo and I found this book to be an incredibly informative companion to the decision making process. It doesn't rank or rate specific gear, but rather discusses the ideas and ideals behind quality gear. It also spends a great deal of time explaining how misleading many of the terms and features of certain audio gear are to quality sound. It explains why some of the best amplifiers are the ones with the fewest knobs or features and how the listener should judge the gear when testing it out.

This book was released over 20 years ago when CDs were just about ready to replace vinyl and tapes as the preferred audio medium, so it spends a great deal of time discussing turntables. While vinyl has come back in vogue to a certain group of people, most people will find this information trivial at best. The truth is, though, that a properly set up turntable with clean vinyl still provides a superior audio experience - the problem is setting up a turntable can be a real nightmare.

The book has a great deal of relevant info regarding receivers/amplifiers, cd players, and speakers. It dispels many of the myths regarding popular speaker designs and renders their concepts completely irrelevant. It also points out why equalizers and other gee-whiz features do more to cover up the audio than make it sound better. While I was hesitant to believe much of this at first, it was proven right almost every single time.

While I generally have disdain for most audiophiles for their snobbery, I have the utmost respect for this book's attitude. It tries to show that respecting and enjoying a good stereo isn't outside the realm of the average joe... a good system costs far less than you think. It is a little outdated, but it's still a very valuable and accessible read with plenty of great information and useful concepts. If you can find a copy (it took me a few years to find one), it's well worth the money.

Excellent and Informative Book

Published in 1987 and out of print, this book still reigns as one of the best sources of information for audiophiles, and especially for lovers of vinyl. It was written in that peculiar period in the mid 1980s when digital sound was just starting to overtake analog sound in popularity, yet the author still had the wise insight to state her preference for analog over digital playback, which was definitely going against the grain at the time (1987), when many were dumping their LP collections and turntables for CDs and CD players. The book goes into great detail regarding turntable and cartridge setup, and that information alone makes this book worth purchasing. There is also a very informative section on the amplification stage, as well as an interesting section on analog tape decks.

She makes one statement on page 17 that I found amusing: "The analog LP, while indeed passing into recording history, has yet to be eclipsed by any other medium*..........*Except reel-to-reel tape".

I never considered reel-to-reel tapes to have better sound than a vinyl LP played on a decent turntable system, but maybe I'm missing something there. Certainly cassette tapes were much more popular than reel-to-reel tapes by the mid 1980s (though reel-to-reel taping of LPs was very popular in the 1970s), so I found her statement to be odd. LPs are here to stay, but I don't consider the same for analog reel-to-reel tape!

Unless you are looking for info concerning the latest digital audio technology (and if that's the case, a book published in 1987 is not where you should be looking), there is nothing dated about the material in this book. It is especially recommended for those looking for info involving analog audio technology.

Overall, an awesome book full of useful info some 27 years after it was published. Highly recommended.

He is an art critic in education for the Ohio Arts Council, consults museum education departments, juries exhibitions, and conducts workshops on studio critiques and writing.

Simply for a warming up.

This book along with other Berret's book titled 'Why is that Art?' is a comprehensive introduction to art and design student. Simply to clarifying the mind for studying art/design by categorizing the elements of art making and meaning into : Subject Matter (content), Form, Context and Medium. It would be fruitful for student alike who willing to learn about writing his own artist statement on a more scholarly-based. =)
