Honest and Balanced Approach

This book reads like an honest, Christian approach to the topic, in which authors have carefully studied the various issues of (1) homosexuality in scripture, (2) concerns regarding legal issues, and (3) challenges and findings in counseling. Unlike what one reviewer has suggested, the authors do not represent only one church denomination. But they are all Christians seeking to better understand the subject. Some of the authors who have published books sold by Amazon in related areas include Richard Davidson (Flame of Yahweh: Sexuality in the Old Testament), Robert Gagnon (The Bible and Homosexual Practice: Texts and Hermeneutics), Stanton Jones (Ex-Gays?: A Longitudinal Study of Religiously Mediated Change in Sexual Orientation), Nicholas Miller (The Religious Roots of the First Amendment: Dissenting Protestants and the Separation of Church and State), and Mark Yarhouse (Homosexuality and the Christian: A Guide for Parents, Pastors, and Friends). The last part of the book includes some interesting testimonies by people who have lived with homosexuality in their own lives but have been able to “know,” “behold,” and be “redeemed by” God’s love.

Must read for all bible believing Christians

This is just the book I'd been praying to find. I've been reading materials from various perspectives yet got to the point where I really wanted something biblical, scholarly, understandable, and authored by biblical scholars from various Christian faiths. Yes this book is scholarly, readable, and the articles aren't just SDA; other bible believing Christian authors are well represented. The editors have done a thorough job with four sections of relevant articles: 1. theological issues/biblical, 2. legal issues, 3. counseling issues, and 4. testimonies. The first section on theological issues stays true to the bible and so far I haven't seen anything else published this thorough. I do not get a sense of any critical, judgmental tone. Just true to what God's word says. Knowing what the biblical position is helps me keep my own convictions and identity clear yet also realizing and accepting that in this day and age many others see things differently. This book helps grace oriented bible believing Christians remain true to God's will. I believe it will help me not lose my own convictions of God's holiness and biblical principles while I continue to socialize, love and accept others who share very different viewpoints.

Not bad, not bad at all.

Dr. Sackett's book is a well thought out review of evidence-based medicine (EBM), and is the source of what seems to be the most often noted definition of EBM. This is a must-have reference for those interested in evidence-based action (which applies to much more than just medicine). However, according to Sackett's own definition, this edition is getting a little long in the tooth. He also follows a pretty classical approach to the logic of rational decision making, which may or may not suit the reader.

Fine Primer

This well done book is partly an introduction to teaching/practicing Evidence Based Medicine (EBM)and partly an act of evangelism. The authors are concerned not only with describing the basic methods of EBM but also with convincing readers that this is the appropriate way to practice and teach clinical medicine. EBM and its precursor movements are based on the correct realization that physicians tend not to be very critical about clinical practice, much of which is learned by emulation. This book builds on an existing movement and the presence of widely available online resources to tap into appropriate critical evaluations of clinical practice. In doing so, the authors attempt to educate physicians about how to use these resources, relatively simple statistical tools that can be incorporated into application of good clinical literature to practice, and how to teach these methods. Because the authors are academics who wish to influence medical education, there is a good deal of emphasis on educational methods. While this may be an apparent short coming for readers who are not academics, it is actually worthwhile for all physicians because self-education is a constant part of our job. This book is very well done with some nice features. It is small and has a durable plastic cover, designed to carried in pockets or in a medical bag, there is a small CD with good examples, and a set of plasticized flash cards on major key points. Drawbacks are relatively minor. More information on how to analyze clinical trials and studies would be useful but in a concise book, something has to give way. Used carefully, the information in this book may change your practice and teaching methods.

The standard for teaching EBM

As a physician-teacher of EBM to internal medicine residents, this is the best book I've run across for this purpose. We utilize the reader's guides, first published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal and later in JAMA, written by Guyatt, Sackett, and others, which are perfectly complemented by this volume. I recommend it to all of the residents and have purchased multiple copies for house staff use (although I can't seem to keep them on the shelf...) It makes learning EBM fun and highlights its usefulness and, most importantly for busy physicians, speed. Worth reading for every physician interested in practicing medicine based on only the best evidence.

Challenging the prevailing opinion that circuit simulation can reveal all problems in CMOS circuits, Masakazu Shoji maintains that simulation cannot completely remove the often costly errors that occur in circuit design. To address the failure modes of these circuits more fully, he presents a new approach to CMOS circuit design based on his systematizing of circuit design error and his unique theory of CMOS digital circuit operation. In analyzing CMOS digital circuits, the author focuses not on effects originating from the characteristics of the device (MOSFET) but on those arising from their connection. This emphasis allows him to formulate a powerful but ultimately simple theory explaining the effects of connectivity by using a concept of the states of the circuits, called microstates. Shoji introduces microstate sequence diagrams that describe the state changes (or the circuit connectivity changes), and he uses his microstate theory to analyze many of the conventional CMOS digital circuits. These analyses are practically all in closed-form, and they provide easy physical interpretation of the circuit's working mechanisms, the parametric dependence of performance, and the circuit's failure modes.

About the Author
Richards J. Heuer Jr. is best known for his book Psychology of Intelligence Analysis and for developing and then guiding automation of the Analysis of Competing Hypotheses (ACH) technique. Both are being used to teach and train intelligence analysts throughout the Intelligence Community and in a growing number of academic programs on intelligence or national security. Long retired from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Mr. Heuer has nevertheless been associated with the Intelligence Community in various roles for more than five decades and has written extensively on personnel security, counterintelligence, deception, and intelligence analysis. He has a B.A. in philosophy from Williams College and an M.A. in international relations from the University of Southern California, and has pursued other graduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Michigan. Randolph H. Pherson has spearheaded teaching and developing analytic techniques and critical thinking skills in the Intelligence Community. He is the author of the Handbook of Analytic Tools and Techniques and has coauthored Structured Analytic Techniques for Intelligence Analysis with Richards J. Heuer Jr., Critical Thinking for Strategic Intelligence with Katherine Hibbs Pherson, and the Analytic Writing Guide with Louis M. Kaiser. Throughout his twenty-eight-year career at the Central Intelligence Agency, where he last served as national intelligence officer for Latin America, he was an avid supporter of ways to instill more rigor in the analytic process. As president of Pherson Associates, LLC since 2003 and chief executive officer of Globalytica, LLC since 2009, he has been a vigorous proponent of a case-based approach to analytic instruction. Together, Beebe and Pherson have developed and tested new analytic tools and techniques, created interactive analytic tradecraft courses, and facilitated analytic projects. In their work as analytic coaches, facilitators, and instructors, they have found the case approach to be an invaluable teaching tool. This second edition of case studies is their most recent collaboration and one that they hope will help analysts of all types improve both the quality and impact of their work.

Greate content - would have preferred a different presentation

I picked up a really old version of this book from a library many years back, and after some struggle googling it figured this was the one. I agree with other reviewers regarding the cover size and style - its not that great and is pretty oversized. However, I had very low expectation from the reviews so it isnt bugging me as much as it probably would have. I was really looking forward to the spiral binding so its easy to flip the pages over. Its a bit offset by the overwhelming colors in the book. I'm going to guess a majority of readers are going to like that, but I guess I just like them old school.
Content wise, its pretty similar to what I recollect from the ancient version, so I am happy with that (so the 5 stars).

The best book on the market related to analysis

As a professor of intelligence related courses, I have read as many books as I could to understand how the US does its work of intelligence. Two of the books I really enjoyed were "Without Cloak or Dagger: The Truth about the New Espionage" and "Dirty Tricks or Trump Cards" - both are dated, but still worth a read. Those books are great for a generalized understanding of intelligence. However, there has always been a void of books that discuss the intelligence mission from a day-to-day perspective. This book fulfills that void. It doesn't cover history, dwell on highly opinionated perspectives, or focus on the overall topic of intelligence. Instead, it focuses on tactics, techniques and procedures of the intelligence analyst. It is the ultimate reference guide for analysts and I highly recommend it.

Great AP Biology Questions

This book covers a lot of AP biology. Many different questions that don't repeat. Some are more difficult than others, but very valuable. It is also made for the new AP Bio and deals with many cell and molecular biology. Very good explanations too!

Explanations are very clear and complete. I'm learning the material

The questions are great. I like the way that the explanations are written. I am learning many things that I found unclear or confusing in class. The practice is really helping me with class. I feel more prepared for class and am using the book each week to review what the teacher covers in class. I'm using the online resources and like the experience on the computer because I can sort the questions as I practice. This is very helpful for me. I feel much better about my class and the AP exam.

HIGHLY recommended book

This book was amazing and so helpful to me. I don't I could have passed without it.
I used this SAT Biology E/M book to review and test my understanding of biology. Very helpful explanations and all the SAT Bio topics were covered. It seems like 1500 questions is a LOT, but with so many topics and a structured systematized preparation approach, I was able to go though all the material and improve my knowledge in some areas I was not very clear about. I HIGHLY recommend this book for you SAT biology preparation.

Arguably the best book of short stories published in 2001, The Complete Works of Isaac Babel, expertly translated by Peter Constantine, should affirm Babel's place among the top Russian short story writers. Like Chekhov, Isaac Babel primarily wrote odd, tightly wrung little stories in which he displays a variety of convincing styles and tones, with each piece having an immediacy and weight that exceeds its brevity.

Babel's writing life lasted approximately 20 years. (He was executed by Stalin after a few military subjects unflatteringly portrayed in his "Red Cavalry" stories gained positions of influence.) His most notable stories depict the Russian civil war and Jewish soldiers, his childhood, and Jewish thugs in his native Odessa. Often journalistic in style, his stories provided gripping war accounts to Russians eager for news from the front, as in this passage from "The Church in Novograd": We drank rum, waiting for the military commissar, but he still hadn't come back from the headquarters. Romuald had collapsed in a corner and fallen asleep. He slept and quivered, while beyond the window an alley seeped into the garden beneath the black passion of the sky. Thirsting roses swayed in the darkness. Green lightning bolts blazed over the cupolas. A naked corpse lay on the embankment. And the rays of the moon streamed through the dead legs that are pointing upward. So this is Poland... This collection is a delight for its organization: the stories are grouped by periods, feature introductions, and include helpful maps. One of the great Russian writers of the 20th century, Babel (1894-1941) was arrested in 1939 and later executed by Stalin's regime. In 1954, his work was largely republished, but much of his correspondence, drafts, and manuscripts was confiscated when he was arrested and has never resurfaced. Now, for the first time, all of Babel's surviving work has been assembled into one volume. Readers new to Babel will discover his "Red Cavalry" stories, plays, diaries, screenplays, and short stories. In addition to an introduction by Cynthia Ozick, the book is graced with an excellent preface and afterword by Babel's daughter, who also edited the volume. Isaac Babel's works should be read and re-read and re-re-read. At his best, Babel can write such short, simple-appearing sentences that contain a complexity of thoughts that stuns. At his worst, for example the purely propagandistic "blurbs." he is still interesting but less mind-grabbing. It's no wonder Stalin had him shot. Babel would have caused people to think, an always dangerous thing in a totalitarian state. If you like to think and like good writing, The Complete Works are worth a look.

Like Finding A Secret Treasure

I bought this book after stumbling upon one of Babel's army stories from the "Red Cavalry" collection. Babel truly is a master of short fiction. I am surprised that I have gone this far in my life and have just now found him.
The biographical information provided by his daughter enhances the reading pleasure as well as draws attention to the politics that contributed to self-censorship and eventual assassination from Stalin's henchmen.
Babel is the Checkov and the Turgenev of his time: classic Russian Short Fiction at its most beautiful.
The only drawback to this extensive collection is its extensiveness. Babel's longer works and plays lack some of the focus and integrity of his short stories. Luckily the short stories make up the bulk of the book.
If you can afford it buy the hardcover. It comes in a protective box and I guarantee this is a collection you will want to preserve and cherish forever.

It's Certainly Not Babble

If you have not read Babel, you should. This is a beautiful addition to your library and, as advertised, contains the complete works. Why would you want the complete works? Once your appetite is whet by Red Cavalry, you'll want more. Thus, you might as well buy it in this attractively boxed set.

The writing? Gritty and gut wrenching. And unlike the western modernists, easy to understand. No interpretation required. Straight gut punches.

Good for those green on hacking.

I have some experience with some of the tools mentioned in the book but I wish it was a little bit more up-to-date like maybe some Windows 10 related info. Not sure if anybody is interested in cracking Windows 2000. But the presentation is good and if the book aimed to start small... I think it works. It's an excellent beginner's guide for maybe 2012 but these days... I think there are fresher tools out there. Hope a 2nd edition discusses those. :)

Great Info For Beginners

For those looking to get into hacking, there is a lot of useful information in this book. Having previous experience myself, I can verify that the techniques taught here are very effective. I would like to see a follow up book from this author, with updates for newer OSs, but most servers are still running Windows 2000 or NT, which is what you are after in the first place typically.

Probably partly my own fault for not reading the full description of the book, but anything that states it is an Ultimate guide should be longer than 64 pages. The information provided in this book is very generic and could be acquired by reading a wikipedia entry on the topic. It provides some useful information, but far from what the title would indicate.

About the Author
Frank J. Fabozzi is editor of the Journal of Portfolio Management and an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Yale University’s School of Management. Frank is a Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Public Accountant. He is on the board of directors of the Guardian Life family of funds and the BlackRock complex of funds. He earned a doctorate of economics from the City University of New York in 1972 and in 1994 received an honorary doctorate of Human Letters from Nova Southeastern University. Frank is a Fellow of the International Center for Finance at Yale University.

The market has changed dramatically since 1998, when this was published. This is particularly true regarding the material on portfolio management strategies and most true re the various forms of credit, and credit-related derivatives, most of which did not exist in 1998.

As I find with all of the Fabozzi books, this is a very comprehensive overview of a complex subject. Fabozzi has gathered together an impressive list of experts who each write on what they know best. I found the chapter on Latin American loans to be particularly useful.
