An extremely concise & compelling look at Christ's influence

The authors have compiled quite a compendium of information regarding the impact of the life of Jesus Christ on the world and its checkered history. Although we may have heard or read of some of the information contained in its pages, this book takes the time to research many of the sources of that information and relates it in a very clear way. It also points out that, even though Christ was perfect, His followers are often flawed. Without overlooking the foibles of these followers and the "church" in general, Kennedy makes us step back and examine a world without the Incarnation. The book points out that even detractors of Christianity use many of its tenets to either live by or apply extra-biblicly. It is a great resource for Christians to have in their library. Probably more than that, it is a book that is geared to the skeptic or person who believes that the effects of religion, Christianity in particular, have been detrimental to human development. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to know how God intervenes in the affairs of human beings and His effect upon our present world.

I recommend this book to every one. It has been said that the United States of America is not a Christian nation. What a lie! It has been said this nation was not founded on Christian principles nor by Christian people. This book states the facts. This book should be required reading in our high schools and colleges across this land. This book should be in every home across this land and be read by every individual in each home. Jesus Christ came and changed the world and we are so BLESSED because the Son of God came to dwell with man! The worlds attempt to take God out of everything in this country and elsewhere is bringing catastrophe upon catastrophe in this nation and elsewhere. Wake up America and get on your knees!!!

The evidence is all around us

I must say this book was not exactly what I expected. I guess I was looking for a detailed analysis on what life might have been like if Jesus had never happened, but instead I was treated to a litany of what Christianity has accomplished.
I don't for a minute dispute the claims Mr. Kennedy makes primarily because the evidence is all around us. There is no doubt that many of the laws, institutions, traditions and notions spawned by man's love for Christ has raised the human condition beyond anything that could have been imagined before Him. It is also a fact that wherever Christianity has gone freedom, wealth and love of neighbor soon follow. If you think about the worst poverty, disgusting living conditions and religious and human persecution that exists on Earth today it is in countries where they've have no positive exposure to Jesus Christ. Many countries like Sudan, India, China and many Arab states openly persecute Christians. These are not nations fleeing immigrants are dying to get into like they are the Christian nations of Europe and North America.
Kennedy does tend to preach to the choir throughout the book and I doubt a skeptic or non-believer would be swayed by his arguments. Still, most of the facts presented can not be so easily disputed. Skeptics have a way of focusing on one or two negative aspects and declaring the whole Jesus movement as bankrupt. Would these people say the same about the American experiment? If so, then thanks to a certain President, the America we love has been completely discredited.

Deborah Sharon Love is a magnificent storyteller! I was immediately drawn into the charming yet complicated world of the main character, a young black girl with her own ways of dealing with peer pressure and sizing up the adults that cross her path as she grows up in a very profound existence. Blue Moon is filled with some of the most descriptively-alive characters I've ever experienced while reading a book. This book is a must read!

Blue Moon, Excellent!!! Debra Love did a great job depicting the street life. She didn't sugar coat, it is what it is. This novel is powerful, you feel like you're in the moment. Living the life of drugs and prostitution, she shows us just how easy it is to get caught up in the trenches. As she move house to house, state to state, she always knew God was her refuge and strength, wherever she went. It's like God does not offer us a way out of the testing of life, but he offers us a way through. Debra Love got that, and served it to us in Blue Moon. Thanks Ms Love, well done!!!

Couldn't put down!

After hearing Lisa Brandt, the author, talk about "The Naked Truth" on our local radio station yesterday, I had to download it. I'm so glad I did! A quick, hilarious read that looked lightly at some very awkward situations.

The book chronicles the summer of 1980 which the author spent working at a Naturist resort when she was in her late teens. I don't know too many student jobs out there that led to the predicaments that Lisa found herself in, but I'm definitely glad she shared!

Bare-butt, ball-faced bag of biased balderdash and bunk

“The Naked Truth” should be filed with “True Confessions” or “True Romance” magazines under spicy reading, but poor reporting.
Still, it’s a toss up of which is more offensive: the breech of serious journalistic ethics or the obvious bias. To be clear, I’ve also been a guest at various nudist resorts in Australia, the United States , Canada and beyond, since the late 1980s. Thus, from a personal experience, I find this account of the nudist lifestyle inaccurate for a variety of reasons.
It’s not what is told, but what isn’t!
The first person story details how a Canadian, small-town, high school graduate takes a summer job as a domestic at a nearby nudist resort to the shock and horror of her family. It’s something to do before college and her acceptance frees her from a summer of back breaking labor in the family business of humping railroad ties. Not that there are many other job choices, but to sugar coat this fact, a slight attempt softens this necessity by emphasizing her teenage angst and desperation of “how hungry I was for adventure” and rush for life experience.
Meantime, she arrives at the nudie place came with plenty of personal baggage that includes a poor self image that could describe a troll. Add pre-conceived “convictions” that nudists are weird and twisted. Thus, she vows never to compromise to this lifestyle by disrobing. Although, during a late night party swim, she loses at least 50 percent of her integrity with a scant display of “the girls” because her improvised swim suit is too dorky.
Yet, dork doesn’t come close to her disdain for the guests with numerous comments regarding floppy boobs, tiny dicks and body fat rolls. Her dilemma is compounded, with these less than perfect people parading around the resort, as she’s forced to control herself from laughing out loud, particularly during a visit from her judgmental aunt and mom.
Nor is this scorn limited to the guests. Enter Kim, her Christian room mate, who agrees, like her when they first arrive, to never to disrobe. Yet, shortly and to the author’s horror, Kim goes over to the dark side, getting nude and finds romance. Neither of which are a violation of the Christian faith.
Condemnation isn’t limited to colleagues or obese guests. Particularly when the “perfect body” of the restaurant supervisor Jade happens to walk nude past the author accompanied by visiting, super-horny teenage male relatives. With supreme control, she stifles a “guffaw” as Jade approaches, hoping to pass it off a “non-judgmental grin” for a woman who’s been a mentor and very kind to her. Likewise, when a guest hands her a healthy cash tip for what he considers above and beyond service. Instead of waiting until later, when the guest will be away or asleep, she streaks to deposit this cash in the communal tip jar and is seen by the kind guest.
In between these experiences are encounters of sexual invitations that include exhibitionists, an all expense paid trip by a New York billionaire, a $5,000 proposition for a one night stand. from a pickup artist, with another $5,000 if she conceives his child. Add a big, hairy red lesbian making lunch time advances and an elderly voyeur with a penchant for Polaroid photos of all the “camp girls.”
In all scenarios the author tactfully and wisely declines these offers. Hurrah!
I can’t say sexual mischief doesn't happen in nudist resorts. I’ve had offers. However, from this story that’s ALL that goes on, and this just is NOT so. Nudists are staunch about policing themselves. I have seen instances where guests were escorted to the gate, without refund for such blatant behavior. Of course, if all that was written was about nudists playing volley ball, lounging and having a good time by the swimming pool with their children, this would make for a very dull read. And yet there is no positive reflection of nudists in this book. Bored Lisa even skips out on the agreed employment by leaving early. Hmm, what’s wrong with this picture?
It’s convenient that this nudist camp has closed and the key players passed on. Meantime, I’d love to talk to Kim and the other workers for their side of the story.
It’s also good that her “experience” helped to land her a mass communications position. However, I wonder how things would have worked out if she’d taken Jade’s advice and gone to that horse farm in Tennessee.
I give this book two stars because. while I question its validity, it is very well written and edited. It should be listed as fiction since since, as Shakespeare said, “Me thinks the lady doth protest too much.”

Fun, Frank and Frisky - The Naked Truth is a real eye-opener!

If you're like me, you've always wondered just what goes on behind the closed doors and leafy trees of a nudist resort. Lisa Brandt pulls back the branches and shares her own pre-college summer experience as one of the very few clothed employees at a resort in Ontario, Canada. Her conversational style lends itself very well to the subject matter (like dishing with a girlfriend) which she approaches with candor, empathy and humor. Both enlightening and entertaining, The Naked Truth will make you wonder what you would have done in Lisa's shoes, had you even been allowed to go in the first place! You don't need permission to sneak behind the scenes thanks to The Naked Truth, so just enjoy. And be grateful it's not a picture (or pop-up) book!

Soft and bright cover a little dull on the inside.

This book is okay. It has a rattle sewn into the first page and the rest of the pages crisp. The outside cover with the giraffe is soft but the others are just a regular cotton fabric. The images on the inside aren't as nice as the embroidered giraffe on the outside because they are sewn into the fabric and flat. The other animals aren't as colorful either. I bought this for my son to chew on however he loves shaking and hitting it more because of the sounds it makes. He is 6 months old and it keeps his attention. After he get done looking at the pictures he enjoys slamming the book on the floor. It entertains him so that is the most important part.

I like the book, however I think they could have made it more fuzzy and soft (if that is the title). The cover is very nice and I wish more of the pages were like the cover; it has a combination of different textures, which is what I like about it. However, the pictures of the animals are nice. I think it is worth getting; I just had different expectations.

My 4 month old daughter loves this book. I mean loves. The pages are crinkly and makes a good amount of noise to be prepared for that. The back and front cover are soft fleece like material and the pages also have little tags your little one can grasp onto. The only down side is that the book is a little hard to clean and needs to be spot cleaned. But is it worth it. Great Buy!

nice facsimile

This edition is a nice facsimile of a nineteenth-century edition of the novel. I do wish, however, they had included the illustrations. Auguste Hervieu accompanied Frances Trollope on her tour of Manchester when preparing to write the novel and his illustrations are almost better known than the novel. The illustrations appeared in most editions so I assume it was a deliberate decision not to include them here.

Trollope's novel is of more historic importance than aesthetic. Many credit it as being the first "industrial" novel and it is one of the few to feature a male worker. It also features a division in focus (Michael Armstrong and Mary Brotherton, the wealthy daughter of a mill owner), something that is both a strength and a weakness: a strength because it presents the issues of mill labor from multiple perspectives; a weakness because while the story begins and ends with Michael, he disappears in the middle while we get Mary Brotherton's education into the horrors of child labor.

Outstanding - a book that opens many doors.

I've had this book for years, and keep coming back to it. Many books define fuzzy numbers in various ways, and hint at combining them with some kind of arithmetic. Kaufmann and Gupta actually carry out those operations. Since fuzzy addition is a kind of convolution, they also show why fuzzy subtraction does not reverse the operation - deconvolution does. If you want to use fuzzy arithmetic for constraint propagation, this changes the basic nature of backwards propagation.
I just wish the author's clarity had extended a little farther into the mechanics of the various kinds of convolution. They handle discrete cases only, and offer about the least readable presentation of convolution that I've ever seen.
I'm not a theoretician, so I appreciate the book's clarity and examples. It is so clear and thorough that I refer to it for ideas quite unrelated to fuzzy arithmetic. If a sign of a great book is the number of unrelated topics that it clarifies, then this title is very good indeed.
This title may not suit the beginner and may not suit the expert. For us in the middle, though, it is incredibly helpful.

Too many errors, not enough content

Although the intent of this text is laudable - to introduce the concepts of fuzzy arithmetic to engineers, and provide certainty in understanding through examples - the execution of the work is terrible. Only the most fundamental of the concepts is communicated with clarity, due to a general sloppiness in writing style, poor mathematical presentation, and lack of logic in some of the "proofs" that are presented.

The technical content of the book could have been presented in less than 20 pages out of the 315. The rest is overstuffed with repetitive and rather trivial examples presented in unnecessarily drawn out detail. The real demise of this work, however, is in the unfathomable number of typographical errors that occur throughout the book. I would estimate there are at least 2 or 3 such errors PER PAGE. This renders the usefulness of the excruciatingly detailed examples very questionable.

The presentation of the mathematical concepts is poorly done, often through a stumbling writing style. In more than one instance, a "theorem" is given "proof" by simply re-stating the theorem and declaring that it has been proven. I understand that this is not meant to be a "theoretical" book, in which case I would have accepted a statement of the theorem without proof, but a non-proof should not have been included.

In a few instances (introductions to chapters) the authors attain moments of clarity using a more verbose writing style. Particularly in trying to explain the nature of fuzzy numbers and their difference from random numbers it is clear that the authors are communicating something of importance. Unfortunately, once past the introductions, these themes are not further developed.

Did I learn from reading this book? Yes, I did learn a good deal about fuzzy arithmetic despite the nature of the work, and yes, I can see that portions of the book can be used as future reference to understand details in the arithmetic operations on fuzzy numbers. However, I think any novice student is going to be at a loss to obtain a firm understanding of the subject from this presentation.

The style of this book is excellent in that it gives you plenty of examples of how fuzzy arithmetic works. Honestly, I doubt there exists a more comprehensive book on fuzzy arithmetic around.
You'll find information on fuzzy numbers and their basic arithmetic, how alpha cuts work in fuzzy arithemtic, type-two fuzzy numbers, probabilisitic-fuzzy hybrid numbers, fuzzy modular arithmetic, combinatorics with fuzzy numbers, and an application of fuzzy arithmetic to catastrophe theory. And more, of course.
If you can find a copy, get it immediately. The explanations are clear, the reasoning is thorough, and the examples carefully illustrate the ideas. Steal this book!

A classic on motivation!

This is an advanced, technical work written by a leading theoretician. McClelland examines motivation in the personality and behaviorist traditions. He focuses on the dimensions of personality which drive behavior: achievement, power, affiliative, and avoidance motives. This work explores motivation in the context of trends in society, cognitive effects, values and skills, and training. Provides an enormous bibliography. This work is a classic and deserves careful reading by anyone deeply interested in the subject of motivation. Highly recommended!

A superb summary of a long and dynamic literature

This book is highly comprehensive textbook of the research into human motivation from the perspective of a powerful and innovative thinker. It is indicative of the author that it was out of date the day it was published, but is still a valuable text.

McClelland's research approach is better reflected in his journal articles though

Actually, I, Joe, purchased the book, not Julie. McClelland is especially known for research on achievement motivation, but I was interested in his approach to motivation overall. The book is largely a survey of different approaches to studying motivation; it is written as a textbook. There is also another book on human motivation edited by McClelland that is a collection of articles written by various authors including McClelland. This is not that book. McClelland's research approach is better reflected in his journal articles though.
