Understanding Islam and Christianity: Beliefs That Separate Us and How to Talk About Them, by Josh McDowell, Jim Walker

For years, international apologist Josh McDowell has been alert to the challenge of Islam―and how Muslims’ objections to Christianity can raise deep doubts in believers’ minds. His recent on-the-ground research with Muslims in the Middle East has crystallized into this practical resource focusing on Jesus and the gospel. Aided by Islam expert Jim Walker, McDowell lays out the evidence on the crucial issues:

  • What kind of prophet was Jesus? Was he the Messiah?
  • “Son of God”? “Son of Man”? What’s that about?
  • How are God and Jesus related? Can they both be God?
  • The gospel―how could God dishonor his Son by letting him die horribly? What good did his death do?
  • Aren’t the Bible’s accounts of Jesus corrupt?

With all this, as well as backgrounder appendixes on the basics, believers will have authoritative evidence from Scripture and history to intelligently deal with Muslims’ questions about and challenges to Christianity.

Hard Questions, Offensive Answers
By Gordon Tubbs
Understanding Islam & Christianity is a great 101-level read if you are a Christian and want to know more about Islam. Josh McDowell is no stranger to these sorts of works, as he has made a great career out of defending Christianity. I must first point out that about 50% of this book's content is basically "The Case For Christ" (Lee Strobel) and the classic "More Than A Carpenter" (Josh McDowell). Although the content is woven in context with Islam, the "meat" of it is basically a reprisal of those previous apologetic works. That being said, the other 50% of this book takes a hard look at Islam from a historical-critical perspective, no different from modern day secular criticism of Christianity. The final two chapters offer a deeper theological perspective of Islam from a Christian point of view, by analyzing the message of the Quran and the life of the Prophet Muhammad to see if they are coherent and consistent with the Bible and the life of Jesus. If you are looking for ammunition against Islam, this book has plenty - though I would urge caution because I think this book really needed two more key areas of valuable content to really make it top notch:

1. A chapter about inter-religious protocol for Christians. In a friendly inter-religious dialogue, it can be very easy to offend the other if precautions are not taken to avoid pejorative understandings of religion. Parts of this book I'm sure would therefore quickly offend a Muslim if you were to start off by saying "Muhammad is a False Prophet because the Bible says so". Rather, the best way to speak to a Muslim is to see Islam from their perspective: it is a religion that enables them to submit to the will of God by practicing key tenets (the Five Pillars) and reciting the Quran.

2. More citations of the Quran. Only until the ladder parts of this book does it really get into the Quran with proper citations. In the first parts, the authors merely say what they think the Quran says or what other scholars have interpreted it to say without giving a proper citation. The general flow of the book is more establishing a defense of Christianity first, then criticizing Islam, but if you spend an entire chapter on the Quranic version of Jesus and don't list verses from the Quran to show what the Quran says, it puts the reader in a difficult position to simply take the author at their word.

I'm willing to bet money that 99% of the Christians who read this book also haven't read nor own a Quran, and so if you really want to engage Islam, go to the source material and read it for yourself... THEN read this book if you have questions/doubts/concerns regarding the defense of Christianity in light of the Quran.

Very interesting with "meaty" information
By Cafe Lily Book Reviews
This was a very interesting book to read, and while I thought I knew the main differences between Islam and Christianity, this book really opened my eyes to some details that I had not read before.

I saw another review that complained about this book being limited in topics.

The author clearly states on Page 13, that this book addresses the **most frequently** discussed topics between Muslims and Christians. This is not being marketed as an exhaustive reference, so you may be disappointed if you are expecting a wide variety of topics.

The topics covered are the ones most frequently debated or discussed between the two religions, such as: Was Jesus crucified?
Was Jesus the divine Son of God?
Is the New Testament reliable?

These topics and others are covered, and I think the authors provide a lot of "meaty" information on these subjects. As a Christian, I appreciated the chapters that cover (and prove) the reliability of the New Testament. If you enjoy apologetics, these chapters are excellent.

When readers finish this book, they will understand that while Muslims may use a few similar semantics, they do not believe that Jesus is the Son of God, nor do they believe in the Trinity. It's pretty cut and dried, and educational if you are looking to further your studies.

A Great way to start learning about some key differences with Islam and Christianity.
By Rico
Although this book does not cover the totality of Islamic theology and focus on various other things like the five pillars of Islam or the application of Sharia Law, it does focus on probably one of the, if not most decisive thing that separates the two faiths- the divinity of Jesus. As a believer/ follower of Christ who works for a major Christian missions organization, that runs into Muslims frequently on the campus I work on, I really need to understand key points of difference in Islam and Christianity such as the ones mentioned in this book.

Josh and Jim do a great job showing the points of agreement Muslims and Christians may have with Christ as an example, but also talk about what makes Jesus unique, in terms of his claims of being more than a prophet, but the Son of God too. I love how the book also not only addresses issues centered on Jesus, but also on the formation of the trinity and formalizing of the New Testament canon.

In addition time is taken to examine the prophetic and biographical back ground of the Muhammad, the man who played a critical role in the start of Islam in the 7th century. I found it extremely helpful that Islamic claims of Muhammad being foreshadowed in the bible are also addressed.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is a Christian as a great way to start investigating the beliefs and claims of Islam compared to Christianity or as a way to supplement one's current understand of the two faiths. I would also say this could be a great way to help a Muslim to understand your faith as a Christian.
