The authors are missing some facts or have put false facts in the places of others. The whole book seems to revolve around slavery which is an American topic but it is NOT THE ONLY TOPIC in American history.

Very poor book
By Mr. Freeze
This book was required for my American History class, and I am not impressed with it at all. I was expecting a very detailed book, and in turn I received this; a very bias liberal rag that dwells on blacks, women’s rights, and slavery. While I am not arguing those are not important, I did not appreciate how much of the book each topic comprises. Of course, both authors are professors of African-American Studies and Women’s Studies, so it is obvious they are going to include their field of study.
To begin with, the book does a very poor job at elaborating on very crucial historical points. For instance, the American Revolutionary War is glossed over. This subject is confined to a single chapter (Chapter 6), and it focuses more on the blacks and women during this time than the major battles and important historical figures, such as Major General Nathanael Greene. In addition, there is no major discussion on economics, the wars fought between the American Indians and European nations, and why the wars were fought; all of those points are also glossed over. In Chapter 4, a chapter which is meant to discuss religious strife and the Great Awakening, the majority of the chapter talks about women’s rights and how they were constantly beaten by their evil, overbearing, racist husbands.
As mentioned before, the book avoids major historical figures. For example, as I read the book I did not find one mention of the founder of the United States Navy, John Paul Jones. As a veteran, I am shocked that the founder of the U.S. Navy was omitted entirely. Also, the authors sugarcoat Sherman’s March, and do not even mention his burning of Atlanta. They instead discuss the benefits surrounding carpetbaggers and how only a small percent of them exploited the post-war South. Throughout the book, it can plainly be seen that these two authors have a very negative opinion of the South, and most likely have never traveled there.
While the book is replete with quotes, none of them are cited, and there is no reference page located anywhere within the book. Also, the authors tend to dramatize and sprinkle colorful words into the text to show how bad white people are. The following is a passage from page 78: “…the foul-smelling and crowded hold became a nightmare of disease and despair…women especially were subject to sexual abuse and rape by crew members.” With no citations or reference page, the reader is meant to take everything written by the authors as pure fact.
I also noticed a few historical mistakes within the text, and it seems as if the authors did not bother to research their work. The following quote is from page 84, where the author reluctantly discusses economic distress within the colonies and how the British Military took colonial recruits. “The Royal Army and Navy also periodically sought colonial recruits, though mostly is times of war.” There has never been such entity known as the British Royal Army. I am highly disappointed with the authors’ lack of understanding of British History when writing this book.
In conclusion, this revisionist history book is for High School students, not for anyone pursing college. The authors infantilize the reader constantly and by omitting citations and a list of sources, they assume that students would not like to fact check or research a topic further. It is very clear that this two “trained historians” are two know-nothing professors that failed to do a bit of research before writing this garbage. I personally believe that if you want to read a real history book, read Samuel Eliot Morison. Most importantly, for any teachers looking at this book for your upcoming semester, please avoid this at all costs.

Pathetic.
By El Gordo
Sad attempt at recreating American history to fit the typical liberal narrative. No in-depth analyses - just a dumbing-down of American history by 2 brain-dead authors. Avoid at all costs.
