John E. Brandenburg Ph.D. is a veteran plasma physicist and the Senior Propulsion Scientist at Orbital Technologies Corporation in Madison, Wisconsin. He is the author of Beyond Einstein’s Unified Field, Life and Death on Mars and Cosmic Jesus. He appears on various radio and television talk shows and lives in Madison, WI. Death on Mars is his fourth book.

A mixed bag

Mars has always fascinated humans, from our earliest times on Earth. In recent years, with the high resolution images of the Red Planet provided by Mars Rovers, many curious people have poured over these images. And many have noted what seems to be a landscape littered with anomalies, including what appear to be the remnants of past civilizations. I've downloaded hundreds myself. It is with this in mind that I ordered this book, intrigued to read an objective scientist's take on this apparent global catastrophe. I settled in and began reading.
I tensed just a bit as I began to read the first page; it started with a Biblical quote, with the author clearly conveying his own religious convictions. A bit unexpected from a scientist, I thought, but not that unusual. My interest was in the scientific evidence for a planetary catastrophe, so I simply shrugged this off momentarily. As I continued to read, I found that the book really consisted of three primary components. The first 140-some pages was as much an autobiography as it was about Mars and science; while Brandenburg's incipient interest in Mars was detailed, there was quite a bit that was superfluous. While knowing that the author came from a religious background was relevant to understanding his views on the developing matter, as well as knowing his academic and work history, there was a significant amount written on such topics as his family, church activities (including the author's embrace of the "neo charismatic", Pentecostal Church) and other peripheral subjects. Included also was his employment history, which included weapons research during the heyday of profligate defense spending under President Reagan (`Star Wars') with defense contractors. The author clearly enjoyed that period of lucrative work on space-based weapons systems.
The second component, and the one that actually ties directly into the book's title, deals with the scientific basis for the assessment that Mars had an Earth-like atmosphere at one time, had huge amounts of liquid water on the surface and a biosphere which gave rise to intelligent humanoids. The author believed these humanoids to be "primitive" (such as Bronze Age man) but able to build stone edifices. The author then really drills into the basis for his belief of a planet-killing catastrophe by analyzing isotopes found in meteorites which came from Mars, and compared them to what is found on Earth. This part of the book was, for me, the real `meat'. Although somewhat technical, I was able to easily follow it with no more than high school chemistry (the Periodic Table is key) and two years of college geology. I found the analysis fascinating, logical and persuasive. If he is correct, life on Mars was purposely wiped out by a `predatory' space-faring race to prevent future conflicts (for resources, etc.), after suffering a much earlier, planet-wide natural disaster. The idea of such predators monitoring the cosmos for radio and microwave transmissions to find targets (as he posits) is not new, and is plausible. However, since the author believes that Mars humanoids were "primitive", he simply states these advanced aliens just "found" Mars, without any electronic emissions into space from that planet.
The third component following the `meat' section deals with the author's advocacy of a crash program to get humans to Mars to verify the existence of a former civilization by focusing on the Cydonia area (the D & M pyramids and The Face), with archeological excavations. The author believes this must be done soon, in order to learn just what did occur on Mars and to prepare to defend ourselves against a similar fate, and to ultimately become a "space faring race" to preserve the species. It is this part of the book with which I had the biggest problem.
I support a manned mission to Mars, but not like Mr. Brandenburg does. In his detailed outline for this rush to Mars, I was struck by certain things. While I do not wish to get into politics when dealing with a subject like this, the author leaves no choice. His plans (Phase 1 and Phase 2) include the idea that only the United States can do this, in spite of the magnitude of his proposal requiring a united global effort; that there must be a "strong military" (that means U.S. military), and that we must "claim" the `Mars System' (including the moon Phobos as a landing site). This seems like the jingoistic animated film `Team America', but this time in space.
There were other, less substantive things in the book that bothered me. The `Face on Mars' was reproduced 27 times in the book, along with many other photos, in low-res black and white (although there are a few color plates). Words were improperly capitalized; the writing was mostly in the first person, but would sometimes slip into third person. He incorrectly had H.G. Wells' `War of the Worlds' dated 1906, when it was first published (serialized) in 1897, the year the story took place. He defined the concept of Occam's razor (spelled `Ockham') as "the simplest hypothesis is always right", instead of "the simplest hypothesis usually being correct." There were unnecessary photos (Flash Gordon poster, pic of a postage stamp, etc.) that seemed to be used to fill up space. The author insists that the U.S. Government has been completely open about Mars findings, with NASA leading the way. That is a hard sell to those of us who have seen NASA images purposely blurred or deleted if they contain anomalies; moreover, NASA is by charter subordinate to the DoD. Also, the author was very repetitious; the same phrases or words would often be used several times in the space of a few pages. Finally, the author would frequently lift sections from his other books; all of these sections began with quotation marks, but he never closed quotes, so it's impossible to know if they were one paragraph, one page or the rest of a chapter without reading those other books.
This review may seem a bit harsh, but it is my honest opinion. I found the actual science fascinating and enlightening, but wish it had been better edited and proofed. If I could, I would give it 2.5 stars, but I am rounding up in deference to the one-third that delivered what the title promised.

I enjoyed reading Death on Mars

I enjoyed reading Death on Mars. I’m trained at an engineer and I liked the use of equations and graphs to visually describe what the author is say with words.
The point of the Death on Mars is the amount of Xenon 129 in Mars atmosphere can only be explained by a large scale Fusion (Hydrogen) bombs going off in Mar’s atmosphere. This fact coupled with a large asteroid impact within the center of nuclear explosions leaves from for doubt. It’s the smoking gun evidence of intelligent life on other planets. Our perhaps the lack of intelligence, for who would make a bomb with a 10 billion megaton yield.
One point I found frustration was the use of acronyms: NASA, MSSS, JPL, DRM, LESA. I was ended up writing notes in the margin to keep things straight.
Note to author, please add appendix in the back for acronyms!

A few gold needles in an otherwise normal haystack

This book is incorrectly titled. I think it would be better called "My Journey to Vilified Mars Expert". If you want his personal story, and it is interesting, then by all means buy and enjoy this book. He doesn't really get to the "Death on Mars" thing until chapter 6 (pg 239 of 352) and the last chapters are all about "let's do a manned mission to Mars". I think a manned mission to Mars would be so very wonderful, but I bought the book because I was interested in the tagline which has to do with a nuclear disaster on Mars. For those of you who are wondering, it all boils down to the fact that the Martian levels of Xenon 129, Argon 40, and Krypton 84 are all congruent with the explosion of high-yield nuclear weapons. We have these same ratios on earth, and we know that nuclear tests are the cause. Further, the strongest concentrations of radioactivity are provacatively near places that seem like they might be ruins... and yes, Brandenburg worked as part of Richard Hoagland's effort to analyze landforms on Mars that some say give the impression of artificiality. So there your have it, the evidence for nuclear destruction on Mars. I wish the book had a lot more of that kind of thing instead of Brandenburg's life story.
